When is accumulating ammo hoarding?
« on: October 07, 2014, 06:57:12 PM »
Okay korupt here you go  :) . . . Everyone here has the same opportunity to purchase ammo. Sometimes being in the right place at the right time helps. I think if you can afford it and safely store it, buy all you want. The last time I was at OGC it sure didn't look like there was an ammo shortage. I don't think we have a problem here with ammo scalpers.

Accumulating is when you can't walk through your gun room.
Hoarding is when you can't see your tv any more.

well I agree with mauidog you can buy all the bullets because you have the right but then hey leave some for the next guy because I was thinking about the .22 shortage and sports authority was selling .22 guns but no bullets and the sales man said they were out for months

Okay, so I'm not hoarding. I can't reach my TV but I can still see it.

What .22 shortage? SEC had a good deal on .22 at the gun show and I'm sure they still have at their store, OGC just got a couple of bricks of Rem Viper in today, and I wouldn't be surprised if both X-Ring & Young Guns also has .22.

Why do you believe my buying ammo means you cannot?  If it's a cash flow issue, then you won't be buying either way (EBT not accepted for ammo!).

Do you only buy what you will shoot in one or two range visits?  I buy most ammo in bulk to save money, normally 500 - 1,000 rounds.  When it's on sale or "just arrived" after a long time being out-of -stock for awhile, I pick some up.

Timing is important!  If I wait to buy later, it may be sold out again, or it might not be on sale and cost more.  it could also be much cheaper, but that's the risk I take.

I never get more than 3,000 rounds of .22LR.  Most of what I have was purchased at OGC on "Pre-Order."  I usually ask one or two of my friends if they want me to pick some up for them, too.

Now that I have stockpiled some, I'm not buying as often.  When I shoot a couple of bricks, I replace them as soon as I can which might be a month or two.  That way, I'm unlikely to be without.

When I go to the range, I usually go with others, and I supply all the rifle and shotgun ammo plus most of the pistol.

I kept some of this ammo longer than i expected to, partially from the range closures and partially due to family emergencies on the mainland.  But, at least I'm not stressing, wondering when .22 will be in stock next.

Today OGC tweeted out  they had bricks of .22LR VIPER ammo.  Did you get any of that?

I didn't call or go to OGC today. So, if you still don't have .22 ammo, you'll have to find someone else to blame besides me!!

Looks like you might be contradicting yourself.

Normal is relative.

Some people only buy a box of 50 every year and keep forgetting to go shoot it.

Some buy 3,000 rifle rounds they put aside hoping to go to a Magpul training class on the Big Island if it ever happens.

Some reload hundreds of rounds every month for competition practice and matches.  Those folks don't have the same impact on factory ammo supplies, but they could have a large stash at home after a weekend of non-stop-reloading.

Not everyone buys the same calibers.  I might have 9MM, .45ACP, and .22LR.  Others might shoot 10MM, .380Auto, .22WMR, .357Mag, .40S&W, .44Mag, 5.7x28, etc.  There are enough calibers you will find some in stock while others are out.

I know some have favorite guns and cycle through that caliber, but never seem to use the case/s they bought for the other guns.

If you're looking for "normal," a gun forum might not be the best population for a statistical sample!    ???

mauidog did leave some for the next guy, it's not his fault you were not the next guy. At the gun show I bought, along with many others patrons, 1625 rounds of Federal "Target Grade" 22LR from SEC (five boxes of 325 in an ammo can) for 99 bucks. They had a stack of them when I left. If they sold out, I doubt it, you can't blame anyone because you didn't get any. In the unlikely event they did sell out, PM me and I'll sell you a couple of boxes for what I paid.

Unless I'm experimenting, I buy by the case, never less.  Usually I'll buy multiple cases, but that usually means four or fewer.  If I ever ended up in the news, antis would call me a hoarder, while you guys would say "Eh, not a bad beginning."  To me, the "time to buy" gauge is when I have under 1,000 rounds of a caliber, and the "plenty for now" gauge is 3,000 or more.

Last month, I went to the range on Saturday for practice and Sunday for a pistol match.

I went through 100rds .45ACP and 400rds 9mm.  That's 500 rounds in 2 days.

So, I guess  500 rounds was "enough", and 501 would have been "too much!"

I try to keep at least 3 months of normal range time on hand, I don't compete in any of the clubs so I don't go through that many rounds.

The limiting factor for me, as well as others I'm sure, is finances and storage capacity. I buy ammo when I can afford it as long as I can safely and securely store it. If I made more money and had a bigger place, I'd probably have more ammo (and guns). My "normal supply" is whatever I can afford and store.
