Very true for both cartridges. A gas plug might be the best fall back safety measure.

I am noticing that more re-loadable .30-06 brass seems to be available online now than .308. Possibly because the .30-06 is now more of a "hunting" round, while the .308 is being bought up by the AR-10 community?

A few spam cans of re-loadable Greek .30-06 seems like a good deal now.

lots of factors about the avail of 3006 brass. I have a lot of it since shooting my Garand is expensive and tiring..though it is so much fun than shooting anything else I have. FYI, some of the Greek ammo runs a bit hotter than the issued old LC 3006. I too have an adj. gas plug. When I first got my Garand I made a mistake by buying some 3006 ammo from Sports Authority (little too hot for a Garand). Then I shot some Korean ammo with the corrosive primers and did not clean my barrel thoroughly. I then got it refinished & rebarreled at DGR.

Which gas plug do you have? I see the adjustable one from Schuster, another from Garandgear, and one other. I was thinking the Schuster's or Graandgear would be fine since I would using either surplus ammo or home reloads (following Garand tolerance recipes). Schuster's you have to re-adjust for each style of ammo, while Garandgear seems to be universal.

I tried an adjustable.  While it was nice to be able to tune for different loads and made a slight improvement in accuracy, reliability suffered and became a little frustrating.   I have since put the standard plug back in.  I stick to garand safe loads and have no issues with function.

Since you guys have mentioned ammo, is there anywhere on island that has better prices than CMPs right now? On the mainland I have a bunch of the 150gr PPU stuff but wasn't sure if there is any of that here.

Good question. I have yet to check the lgs's for Garand friendly ammo.

Not really. It about a dollar or more a round here on island for .30-06

I believe that the Sierra manual has a section on loads for gas guns.  The Garand has been around for a long time and most of the popular loads are well known using Varget, 4985, 4064, etc.

Ordered my rifle yesterday. I opted for the .30-06 CMP Special. I am already looking into ordering a Service grade, and debating getting into the "correct" field. Thank you all that have replied to this post!!!

You're going to love it.  M1s are addicting.  If you ever need help completing your receiver, let me know.  I've been collecting and building M1s for many years.
