There's a lot off prickly pear cactus in up country Maui where we hunt. We always joke the deer are on roids from eating fruit. Use big guns to take big bucks. Big pigs too. Cactus forests are huge, easy 12' tall. Growing up in Hawaii kai remember back side of Kokohead & Makapupu was loaded with prickly pear until the state brought in a insect to kill it in early 70's.
Pics of buck living in cactus & BBD.
Hope that insect the state brought is not around if you're planning on growing prickly pear.
Aloha!

Great info Q!!
Any members who know of different varieties of breadfruit and Kalamunguy that would grow in a rainy area. My mango tree is huge but to wet fruit is watery. There are so many varieties of ulu out there. Any good botanist that can help?

I have, but can only give away 1 or 2 because I'm trying to mass propagate.

Shoots ill hit you up when I get back.  Where did you get your original stock from?  Hawaii or mail order is specific enough for me.  Just wanna make sure I get a Hawaii one, ive read online there are different types.

Ive always been told you can split a mature plant with a spade, and both halfs will grow.  Maybe another way you can get more.

My sister & exhusband (Lianne & Adam Rose)
Used to manage the Heiau in Hana, with the
help of the Lono family. Wish could give you contact information but that was many years ago.
The property contained one of the largest collection of breadfruit and kava in Hawaii and diverse endemic plants. Awesome garden.
They used to talk about trying to export ulu to
Oahu. Talking about hundreds of pounds a week.
Understand you already have varieties
selected. You might want to check it out it's
a real special place.

Is the Okinawan spinach the leaf and young vines of the purple sweet potatoes? Sorry I'm only good at collecting animals, only experience with growing was skunky Hawaiian tomato plants in my younger dayz. Got glaucoma but dont partake as responsible gun owner and CDL driver. Know it would help my vision but won't until law changes.
In all seriousness family is in the process of redoing the garden. Asked family to plant Ulu, Kalamunguy, & noni. Got fish ponds too if you know aquaculture. Really like this post.

Thanks again Q!!
Will check it out. My family are Mormons so it's in grained on being self reliant. I'm the black sheep, but prepping is something I continue to do. Just like old WWII victory gardens, at least people are starting to be more aware and trying to live more healthy. Why pay $$$ for organic just learn to grow your own. Thank you bro! This is just as important as having firearms and ammo. Wish it could grow on trees. Ain't going there.
Aloha!

Hey Q,
Just got floored when checking out Kahanu Gardens website. It's the same place my sister and ex brother in law used to manage. What a small world, or islands. If you have connections highly recommend you go there. Fishing for Moi & Ulua, pig hunting is totally awesome. Take your Mosin & fishing poles. Add in you can see and might be able to bring back cuttings and plants, dreams come true.
Family used to live in the old (haunted) care taker hale.
