Lee Precision Pro Auto Disk powder measure discharge problems
« on: November 19, 2014, 09:29:33 PM »
Hi,

I am new to the forum and to reloading.  I just started reloading 9mm and 300 blackout for about 2 months now and I noticed that sometimes my Lee Precision Pro Auto Disk powder measure sometimes does not discharge little to no powder.  Most times I'll catch it whether the case has no powder, but there was a couple times I had a squipload at the range.

Has anyone had this problem before and have a fix for the consistency?  I also use the lee adjustable charge bar instead of the disks.

Thank you

oldfart

I use Bullseye and Trail Boss in mine, and I have never had any problems, unless I let the powder level get too low.  I like to keep the hopper at least half full.  I also use the adjustable charge bar without issue.  Maybe the type of powder you are using is causing bridging in the hopper?

I use the Lee measure only I use the disks. I have not had a problem at all. I have used Trail Boss, Titegroup, H10 and VV N320. Many thousands of rounds and even running the hopper dry and I have had nothing but consistent throws.

All of the pistol powders I use are ball or flake types. I have not tried using stick type powder. What type of powder are you having issues with? Does it occur with all of your different powder types? Or just one type?

Thanks, I'll search for his posts.

Yeah I noticed more in consistency with it being at or below the cone area.  Right now I have only used CFE Pistol and IMR 4227.

I think I might have to try and use the disks and see.  So far the one i see most often with the problem is the CFE pistol, it looks flaky to me.  I haven't loaded too many 300 blackout rounds to tell if the problems persisted with the IMR 4227 after I coated my powder measure with graphite.

One thing I caught the other day when I was loading a small batch using Titegroup. I opened up my last new bottle of it. I noticed it had a rather large clump which did not break up when I poured it in the hopper. I poured it back into the bottle and shook the bottle (With the lid on LOL) and that broke up the clump. This is the first time I have experienced a clump that didn't immediately break up while pouring it into the hopper. I have been scratching my head over this since it happened since the bottle was brand new and sealed. Powder should not clump. Could that be the issue?

Weird,  I wonder if and how the moisture got in the bottle, hopefully these powder still last a long time.  I don't think that is my issue, I usually slowly pour my powder while shaking it as if i was cooking.

Hey mic808,  I'm glad you mentioned that,  I was going to start loading True Blue after I finished my CFE pistol.  I guess it has to do with the adjustable charge bar.  Just one more moving part that adds to the complexity of it.  Are you able to get the exact loads you want with just the auto disks? Thanks!

I'm using extreme bullets currently.  I think my next purchase is going to be precision delta 124 gr jhp.
