Where have I made a recommendation?  But, were I to discuss selection of self defense firearms with my wife (which I have), I absolutely would hold this philosophy.  If I had children to protect, same answer.

If you read my post, I asked if you WOULD make that recommendation, not that you were.  Your response is interesting.  I can only guess that you have not encountered much in regards to criminals or drug addicts.  I have.  I have seen them first hand.  My family has.  My neighbors have.  All situations that occurred were unprovoked, and some occurred in the residence.  Although said encounters did not end up with a death or deaths, all of the events could have easily gone there and some even hit the news.  Seen enough shit to take whatever statistics you are talking about and throw it out the fucking window.  When we see each other again, feel free to inquire what I am referring to.  IMO you can never be overly prepared (don't take this and go full retard), and hoping shit just works out never really appealed to me.

With that said, this is your post and philosophy.  To each their own.

I kind of think the point has been missed by some.

2.  If I ever need a gun, simply having one will be enough.
3.  If having one isn't enough, simply pulling the trigger will be.
4.  If simply pulling the trigger isn't enough, putting a hole in a bad guy will be.

I have a gun and presented it....I shot the gun ( not warning shot but might have missed the moving target  :shake:)...I hit the bad guy ( maybe second or third shot )

My thinking is not too often is the bad guy gonna keep coming unless he has a vendetta against me or family personally. ( Although he might return fire which is a real possibility )

I've known a lot of druggies during my days and none of them wanted to (or were willing to) get shot.

See, I find myself thinking "Wow, I must have done a really bad job explaining this."  Then the hound pops up and totally gets it.   :shaka:

... but would you give that recommendation...
I guess there's some wiggle room for interpretation here, but the phrase "that recommendation" says, to me, that you are referring to a recommendation I had previously made.  When I started this thread, I made the choice that I would not advocate any course of action or change of philosophy to anyone else.  I've been very careful throughout this not to take a stance on what anyone else should do.  Your implication that I had, or my inference that you had so implied, merited a response simply because it was antithetical to what I had set out to do.  Sorry if I over-reacted!

IMO you can never be overly prepared (don't take this and go full retard), and hoping shit just works out never really appealed to me.
Now, it seems to me you're actually agreeing with my philosophy.  The fact that you temper "you can never be overly prepared" with "don't take this and go full retard" means you acknowledge there are reasonable amounts of preparation.  I suspect we differ on percentages, but not on principle.  And I'm really curious how you got "hoping shit just works out" from a post that clearly indicates I plan to carry, and use in need, a firearm.  I explicitly talk about shooting a bad guy.  Does that really sound Laissez-Faire?

When we see each other again, feel free to inquire what I am referring to.
Looking forward to it!

Tom
I'm on basically the same wave lenght as you

I consider firearms as more of a hobby than for self defense

All my toys are locked up.  The only things on my night stand are flashlight, cell phone and a big knife till I can replace the escrima stick my brother in law took back.

The only  situation I can foresee using my toys for is looter deterrence

Don't foresee dying from a gun or knife.   If someone kills me it will probably be a kid that is texting while driving

Best wishes!!
