what to do if a grenade is thrown at you

interesting read on the article, just dont do what bruno mars would do and catch it

would kicking it away from you work to help minimalize the shrapnel and force? like you can kick it away as far as possible and then duck?

If see a grenade heading my way, the thing that comes to mind is run really fast in the opposite direction..

i would think to use my ballistic helmet as a lid or toss it back or run as well, but all of those in the article has been disproven, glad i learned that helmets wont work as cover, sadly the soldier didn't know in advance

I remember seeing something on TV, a "documentary" of some tacticool training.  They were to throw themselves bodily away from the grenade, feet towards it, and cover their ears with their hands while opening their mouths.  Then the footage showed these trainees at some social event, black tie and martinis, and a mystery object gets tossed at their feet.  They all do as they were "trained," and their trainer appears from the sidelines to talk about how well they did.

Without commenting on whether the tactic is sound or not...

What bullshit!  Talk about training for the 0.0001%!  In what possible scenario will any of us ever have a grenade thrown at us?  And, should that infinitesimal percentage event happen, what are the odds it will happen in such a way that we both A) recognize it and B) have time to react?

I really hope I get paid as much as these asshats some day for advice that is every bit as fucking useful!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

i was there when this happened. yup, everybody ran as fast as they could! one of our friends (woody) was the bouncer and he got hit with some frags.

I know that if a nuke is ever dropped were supposed to lay down feet towards the blast and do the whole hands and ears deal. But in the case of a grenade being chucked at you, I'd just jump into cover with the quicks. I'd rather end up in someone's line of fire and hope he sucks at aiming than turn into pink mist. Cause grenade fuses are not nearly as long as Hollywood portrays them to be
I sure as hell don't need a permit to choose my religion, so why the hell do I need a permit to acquire a firearm?

Holy S#*t! MMM, did you're friend survive? i never heard of this before, but i wasn't born yet at that time, sounds like this dudes insane! how'd he even get a grenade? i mean its really hard to react fast under a small amount of time, but since it was in a parking lot, best thing to do is to go for cover behind a car, or a couple cars... including the wheel so no shrapnel hits your feet, hard to say what circumstances were but this is probably the best thing i can think of since there might not be enough time to get out of the blast radius

Lol, what they taught in schools during the cold war is totally useless, duck and cover under your desk will not work, plus that's true, you'd probably have a higher survival rate taking a friendly fire than shrapnel from a frag, hopefully that person has good muzzle awareness, yell grenade as you dive in so he ducks for cover as well and you don't get shot hehe

everybody ran like hell! there were some people that got hit by shrapnel but i don't think anyone got seriously hurt. as i remember(those days my memory may have been fogged by my consumption of great amounts of alcohol), my friend got hit with some small wires that imbedded in his body(don't know what's in a grenade). he was the bouncer throwing the guy out. we were just walking in from the road when the thing went off so we stayed away from the carnage. now that.......is a party.   :shaka:

btw. yup, i'm old!! if you're in your late 40's / 50's you might remember that.

They tested this on mythbusters. I think the conclusion was no matter what you do you're screwed within a close proximity. The shockwave alone will probably kill you.

maybe it would be possible to redirect the blast somehow, kinda like a shaped charged, if there was like something you could use, or use your rifle like a golf club and wack it away  jk

that is some act of valor right there!  honestly i would like to die a hero, i know its not like the movies though, but i don't know how i would even react, just being honest to myself, for all i know i would try run or something, cause im sure that whoever im with will probably race me out of the blast radius

Just saw the Mythbusters episode again.  Anything within a 5ft radius won't matter as the shockwave will kill you.  If you get outside of that radius there's less shrapnel lower to the ground but there's still a good amount especially with the newer baseball grenades vs the pineapple grenades.  So basically hit the deck but still be prepared to get peppered with shrapnel.

lol i don't think any amount of preparation will prepare you for shrapnel flying, is it possible to get out of the blast radius in time? how fast would you have to run within the time before it detonates? i know the fuses are short and it takes time to even identify a grenade, but just curious as it doesn't hurt to know and may benefit if anything, hopefully there's always some cover around, i wonder if those riot shields are effective against it too

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to run around in a circle while flailing your arms wildly about your head..... pretty sure.

My uncle Norman Conard.
This actually happened and uncle Norm gave his life to protect his fellow soldiers.
He would not have thought himself a nut or a hero, he was "Just doing his job".
Thank you uncle Norm for paying the ultimate price.
We are proud of you and I'm sure your fellow soldiers from that day think of you often.
I know I do.
