reloading for HK91
« on: April 29, 2015, 11:10:35 AM »
Anybody ever load cases fired from an hk91?
These cases have the big ding in the side from wacking the ejection port.
They also have those unsightly stripes from the fluted chamber.
I don't have a 91 or any significant experience loading 308.
See the pic...

I was wondering the same thing oldfart. I am not reloading for anything currently. Along with the dings from the ejection port, flute marks/impressions my PTR-91 throws the spent cases out 20' at 2 o'clock so at KHSC I don't recover many. There is a ejection port buffer you can clip on to the 91 type rifles that is supposed to lessen the damage to the cases. If you search the net there are some folks on other forums that claim to reload cases fired from 91's. In the owners manual for my PTR, PTR does not suggest, recommend or support the reloading of a cartridge fired from a PTR product.

I've reloaded them out of my ptr91.  No probs.  I put the port buffer on mine to keep the brass from being damaged.  I only dry tumble my brass so those cases always have the fluted chamber tattoo.  Other than that, they size, load, and fire like any other case in my experience.

Thanks. That's what I was hoping for.
Did you need to use small base dies? Which dies you use?

Lee dies.  I use a case gauge to set the sizing and have no issues in any of my semi or bolt 308's

perfectly fine to make plinker rounds. the dent will be still there and will chamber properly in all NATO 7.62 barrels.

Sorry I dont have  any win 308 to try out.

Late to the thread, but yes I've reloaded my HK91 brass.  My thoughts on the reload is I'd only do it once and on the 2nd go-around I'm not picking the brass up again.

That sucks. I guess I will never buy a HK91/cetme clone.

If you ever had to clean one you'd rethink it too.

It's a great gun, but when it's working right it's tossing cases about 7 yds to the 2 o'clock and the bolt carrier is dirtier than a $5 hooker.  Still love my HK 9X rifles.  The way I look at it is they are there to put the end to my brass.

an ejection port buffer helps keep the brass close and lessens the damage to the case. mine wipes clean after a few hundred rounds but it's nice and wet I lube with a mix of lubriplate 130-a and ballistol there is still a little carbon build up on the bolt but it scrapes right off.

Aloha Oldfart,

I reload for probly 50+ calibers some are very labor intensive wildcats that you need to do a lot of work on the brass. It shouldnt be an issue with dents etc only concern would be any kinks so to speak in the brass. Looking at the pic you provided the case on the far right seems to possibly have a kink in the brass. It may form out fine but I would definitely keep an eye on it. lmk if I can help

I hardly ever shoot my 91 and no way in hell am I sticking a port buffer on my SR9TC.

I would consider my 93, but only if I jump and get it set up with the Magpul magwell conversion.

I just hate cleaning the 9X rifles.

Hey Oldfart,
Does your rifle put gashes in the case heads?

The reason I ask is, I had a sig 556 that was hard on brass. The dents in the side and case mouth would iron out fine but the ejector put mean gashes in the case head/rim that I would have to hit with a file just to fit in a shell holder.

I've changed my mind again. I am wanting to buy a PTR 91 GI.
