Nepal earthquake: Homeless urgently need tents; death toll above 5,500 (Read 2675 times)

Once again, world events remind us to always be prepared.

Disease, injury, lack of medical supplies and doctors, food, shelter, inclement weather, clean water, transportation, electricity, natural gas service, ...

... and the same accusations that the government there is not doing enough to resolve these potentially fatal problems!!

Government is NEVER prepared for major disasters.  The US has proven that time and again.  They do as much as they can, but they are always behind the curve. Planning is one thing.  Actually training and ensuring resources are available is something else. And, if the US is unprepared, how can the governments of smaller, less resource-rich areas be?

If each individual prepared to survive for 4 weeks with the basic necessities, and organized the medical, engineering, and rescue teams ahead of time, do you think fewer people might be waiting for someone else to come to their aid?

Food for thought.

A week after earthquake, Nepal still needs tents and food

Quote
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) - Nepal's government renewed its appeal to international donors to send tents, tarpaulins and basic food supplies
in the wake of last weekend's devastating earthquake, saying some of the items being sent are of little use.

The government also asked donors to send money to help with relief efforts if they cannot send things that are immediately necessary.

"We have received things like tuna fish and mayonnaise. What good are those things for us? We need grains, salt and sugar," Finance
Minister Ram Sharan Mahat told reporters Friday.

Mahat said the government had decided to exempt taxes on tents and tarpaulins.

Information Minister Minendra Rijal said Nepal would immediately need 400,000 tents and so far has been able to provide only 29,000
to the people who need them.

A week after the massive earthquake killed more than 6,600 people and collapsed buildings, temples and homes, remote villages remain
cut off from help.
