Moving firearms to Oahu from another state
« on: May 09, 2015, 04:29:00 PM »
Hi, newbie here. I didn't know whether to attach this to another thread or start a new one, so apologies in advance if I'm doing the wrong thing. I found this website through searching for info on how to move guns to Hawaii. My wife and I are planning to move to Oahu shortly (from NJ - a hellhole of gun regulation :-[), and I have two guns, a handgun and a shotgun:

Browning Hi-Power Semi-Auto 9mm (13 shot clips)
Benelli M2 Tactical Shotgun - Semi-Auto, 18.5" barrel, matte black, normal stock/grip, capacity 5+1

Couple of questions, apologies in advance - any answers greatly appreciated! (I've been looking at the FAQs, too - lot of information there!)

1. I've seen that clips over 10 rounds are prohibited. I guess that means I just chuck my four 13-round magazines and buy new ones? (I was looking online for 10-round magazines, what is a prac/sil magazine vs. a regular magazine?)

2. With the shotgun, it seems I'm OK with the barrel length - but any restrictions on the magazine and semi-auto?

3. If I'm moving a container of my household furniture etc., can I just put the weapons in with all that stuff? Or do I have to specially transport them? And then when they arrive, I guess I have 72 hours to take them down to the local police station and register them?

Thanks!

You mean magazines, not clips   :o

Disassemble the 13rd  mag and keep in a safe place out of sight.
Buy new 10rd mags to be legal.

I knew I was moving back to Oahu for good after my time in the military, so I took all my handgun mags that held more than 10 rounds and installed "mag blocks" to limit them all to 10 rounds.  My Sig P226, Hi Power, Glock 19 all hold 10 rounds now.  If you go to http://www.magazineblocks.com/magento/ find the product you need, install with the permanent epoxy you will be good to go.  I kept my rifle magazines (Hi Cap) AKs, ARs, FAL, M1A mags and only put 5 in them when I go shooting at Koko Head.  Good source of knowledge from forum members on this site guided me with the legal rules of what I could bring back and not bring back.  One regret, I had to sell my Ruger Charger and S&W M&P 15-22P Pistol since they were considered Assault Pistols and banned in the state.

Also, don't bring any magazines when you go register, be sure weapons are unloaded and transported in gun cases.

Thanks! Great advice, much cheaper than new mags. Do you know of a permanent epoxy to recommend?

This product will work for my (2) original browning mags: http://www.magazineblocks.com/magento/hi-power-magblock-10-13-limiter.html

I've got 2 Ram-Line mags (15-shot) that don't have this sort of spring, but a coiled thing that rolls up at the top - I guess I'll have to sell/chuck those.

Don't you have to at least have one empty magazine in the handgun? And if you've got a 13-shot mag and it's blocked to 10 and it looks the same as a 13-shot mag, do they actually take it apart and inspect it?

Shotgun: is a soft case/bag OK?

any epoxy that says its for bonding metal should work.

yeah those would work but if you don't want to limit them disassemble them and bring them as parts and get 10 round mags to use while in Hawaii

as mentioned above by Suka disassemble your mags and bring them keep them disassembled while here in Hawaii as "parts kits" a disassembled mag can't hold any rounds

no you don't have to have any mags with the pistol. It's doubtful that if the 13 was blocked to 10 rounds that HPD would check. That's just my opinion though.

Shotgun: is a soft case/bag OK?
yes that's fine

Just to make it simple don't bring any mags to the PD with you. If asked why say you left them in NJ

never bring mags to HPD when registering your firearms. it's not required by law.

As Suka said, Don't bring mags to register at HPD.

The boys at the window don't care and won't ask.
Main thing is gun is rendered safe.

They might be more concerned if you passed a pistol through the window with the mag still in it and slide not locked back.

+1 on parts kit.

Just disassemble standard cap mags while in Hawaii and buy 10 rounders to use while in state.

guys at the window ask for my mags before. I refused to let them inspect it.

They called the dept. armory for the mags and someone brought over a bunch to test it in my firearm. never knew why they wanted to test function??!????? full auto maybe?

This was decades ago,

Thanks for the advice on the mags. Since the goal is to move to Oahu (and never leave ) I don't know how much use I'll have for the 13rd mags as "parts". But I get where you're coming from.

Maybe keep 'em as "parts" until the 10rd limitation is repealed? heh-heh.

I don't suppose it would hurt to have one official manufactured 10rd mag with me (but not in the gun) when I go down there, in case some new guy demands to see one.  ;)

Another thing I didn't think of: I have all this nice ammo stock-piled. Gonna have to see about getting that out there, too.  ::)

I don't post much on this site.
I can't imagine why anyone registers guns when you have Fed EX
overnight and mainland storage available,
or admits to having any ammunition in the home,
or even talks to HPD.
But I don't live on Oahu.

I'm not sure what you are suggesting - keep your guns stored on the mainland and fedex them over when you need them? Good luck defending the home... ;D

So, how does that work?  Am I paying someone on the mainland to store my guns, and calling him on Wednesday to say "Hey, this weekend I want to shoot my 1911.  FedEx that over right away!"  The gun arrives Friday if I'm lucky (overnight does not mean overnight where Hawaii is involved), I shoot over the weekend, then FedEx it back?  Of course, for that to be legal, one of us has to have an FFL.  What does my mainland friend charge for this service?  What about storage, how much am I paying for that?  Looking at the FedEx rate calculator, it would cost me $98 one way to get my 1911 sent from storage in Louisiana to here via "overnight" service, and $98 to ship it back.

So, a $200 per-event-per-gun shipping charge, plus storage fees, plus handling fee by the FFL at the other end, multiplied by a year's shooting.  That could easily break $10,000 per year.  And what about the added inconvenience?

Nope, I can't imagine why everyone doesn't do this.

The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

But I don't live on Oahu.

Let's see....

1.  FedEX overnight is not only very expensive, it takes at least 2, sometimes 3-4 days between the mainland and Hawaii.

2.  If you're caught with a handgun not registered to you, even if just driving to the range to practice, you're in trouble because handguns cannot be loaned in Hawaii.  Only the registered owner can transport it.

3.  Out-of-state guns have to be registered within 72 hours of arrival.  Again, if caught, you're in trouble for not registering.  You'd need proof the 72 hours hasn't elapsed.

4.  Any firearm you purchase here is tracked by HPD through the seller.  Shops FAX paperwork to HPD, and private sellers with registered guns submit notification of transfer to HPD.  If you fail to register, you're in trouble.

5.  If the trouble you get in rises to the level of a felony, or it's enough of a weapons violation to warrant it, you may be barred from owning guns at all.

6.  This is the system the state imposes.  To defy it is to risk severe penalties.

7.  You can't argue you're a "law abiding gun owner" if you're intentionally breaking the law.  Not a good impression to make on those who would try and ban all private ownership of guns.

8.  And, of course, nobody on this forum does anything illegal.  Since you're new here, we'll cut you some slack!   :shaka:
