Conditions of Acceptance
Call Hawaiian Airlines Reservations, to make advanced arrangements for transportation of firearms
Firearms must be unloaded and packed in a suitable container that meets all conditions listed below:
  A manufacturer's crush-proof type container, made specifically for the firearms - OR -
A hard-sided container specifically designed for the same purpose
The baggage containing your firearms must be hard-sided and locked with a key or lock combination possessed only by you, the passenger

Note: It’s OK to pack firearms in a crushproof container with no lock and then in a locked, hard-sided suitcase.
You may check in up to 11 lbs of ammunition per passenger, packed separately from your unloaded firearms in the manufacturer's original package or securely packed in fiber, wood or metal boxes. Loose or bulk packaging in bags or boxes will not be accepted.

So does that mean I can't fly my 555rds of .22lr bulk boxes with me?

For .22 I think I would just buy it there on the mainland.  Wal-mart sells ammo in most places.  I would think you could find it easier there than here.  Maybe even Sports Authority.

i just got to vegas. the market for 22lr sucks here. ive only been to discount firearms and their prices are ok. psa has good deals

Do you have any CCI MiniMag plastic boxes?  I save all mine so I can better keep count of the rounds I use at the range.  Just refill them with the bulk ammo.

You can also find plastic .22 size boxes online, if you want to spend some money.  Worth it if you want to reuse them for the range or future travels.

Thanks. This is why I want to bring my .22lr up with me to LV. I was told that .22lr is scarce.

thanks for the link.  i only have one 100 round case cause i always bought my 22 in bulk.  this will make range trips a lot easier.

Funny. every other airline I know of allows you to pack the ammo in the same container as the firearm. Last time I flew here on United, I has 200 rounds with my rifle.

According to TSA you can pack ammo, in the appropriate container, with your unloaded firearm.

I do it all the time and while Hawaiian has balked a couple of times, I also travel with a hard copy of the TSA rules, with the appropriate parts, including the ammo section, already highlighted.....

The TSA may have rules on ammo but the final determination is up the commercial carrier. Most most airlines allow 11 lbs Alaska Airlines allows 50 lbs. As far as I know round count is irrelevant  since ammo quantity is by weight.

This is what they consider "bulk packaged" ammunition in bags. 



Also the carrier can place more restrictions over the TSA rules, so ultimately it is up to the carrier if they choose to enforce it.

NO MORE .22 in the mainland...

Traveling with ammo is easy.  I've purchased various ammo and brought it back on multiple occasions.  Bulk box of .223 (500rds), and also other calibers which I put in a plastic ammo box from cabelas. 

Just check the airline weight restrictions.  Hawaiian is 10lbs p/p.  And make sure you declare it when checking in.  Just tell the agent...  That's about it.  Pretty easy.

Yep, but they generally follow TSA rules if there is a question. Not saying it will work all the time. The one interesting thing is that HAL mandates both hard-sided luggage (in addition to the container the gun is in) and a non-TSA lock. So, if TSA wants to look in your luggage and it's not a TSA lock, they will cut it off. If so, they not only will the luggage now be without any lock, but you had your lock cut. I wonder if HAL would replace that lock as they were the ones mandating it?

I forgot to mention.  Yes put it in your luggage/suitcase.  Don't lock it, unless there is a firearms in it , in which case tsa will have to inspect before closing it up.    TSA has always inspected my luggage after checking it in with any problems just ammo inside.
