Legal Facebook question
« on: July 16, 2015, 09:50:48 PM »
So today I got a message that my Facebook account is locked because the name was caught as possible not my real name. Facebook wants people to use their real name. I used my real first name "Matt" for my first and last name so the screen name is Matt Matt. Any who, in their efforts to have everyone use their real name they said that I have to take picture of a government photo ID or two other forms of ID showing either face or birthday and upload it. This is rather annoying since I prefer some anonymity online. I thought about dumping Facebook but i do use it to keep in contact with friends as well as advertise things I make and sell on the side so I don't want to give it up.

First thought was to just photoshop my id and change the name and send them that however supposedly it might violate some federal law that was meant for something else. They tried to bring a woman up on charges for such a thing related to cyber bullying a few years ago. She was convicted but won on appeal. I have already created a decent fake on photoshop and deciding whether to upload it or not. Maybe they have some advanced software and they will find it altered and delete my whole account...

What do you guys think? I know it's not firearms related but it is sort of a legal question.

I do not use my real name anywhere on the internet or anywhere public.   People know who I am and can identify me by my hints.  I used a english to Japanese translator to make my new name, when they locked my account because of my name "hui heavies" on FB. I changed it to "fuku facubook" in Japanese at one point. I thought it to be funny.  It is different now though. In my eyes it's none of their fuggin business what my name, birthday, and any other personal info they collect.

I probably pissed off some liberturd got me flagged, and all I was doing was dropping facts.  The Japanese kanji name must scare them off my back. Hehe, use their stupid PC idiocy against them.

i think the best solution is to write your name in a different language to make it a lot harder for non foreign people to find it, while possibly still passing muster with facebook.

i do this with my twitter account to stop anyone but the people i want from knowing it's me.  Unless those people can read Russian/Cyrrillic writing, which is probably a really small number.

I don't have a fb account so my kids keep telling me that I can create one using a fake name.
So what is the truth here? Can I fake it or not?
No way in hell I'm going to scan my id and send it out on the internet.
Are you  certain that message was a legitimate facebook message?

usually, you wont get flagged by facebook for having a fake name unless it looks obviously fake.  it looks like OP just got unlucky and maybe had a really over the top name.  i've never heard them ask for an ID though, ever.

that, or another user reported him.   if you have a relatively normal pseudonym, it probably means someone accidentally or purposefully reported your profile.

the best way to avoid this is to link the account to a mobile phone number (and there are ways to get a working, non linked phone number.  google voice may still work for this) and use the codes to verify your identity, rather than an id.

its real.  not a scam.

but like i said, you can avoid all this if you link the account to a cell number or dont have a ridiculous name.

It's a relatively new thing with Facebook.  As soon as someone reports you as having a "fake page", FB will ask you for evidence the page is under your real name.

More and more, people are automatically reporting fake pages for people who piss them off.  If you can't offer proof, the page is effectively taken down!

Even if the page isn't fake, the owner can't log in as that FB user until they clear up the "fake page" report.

Based on the conversations on this site, I'd say that's a likely scenario!

The foreign language idea is not bad... until they ask for ID to  verify

they won't ask for an ID, that's RACIST....  unless they think you are white, then asking for an ID is OK...  because we all know, unless you are a white supremacist racists cracker, it is virtually impossible to acquire a valid picture ID.

Facebook promotes "real persona" they don't want fake accounts; it doesn't lend well to their investors.  They don't even let the government make fake accounts and will close those accounts as well.   They go to pretty far lengths to protect the information they are given and use it for their own business purposes.

Well my account has been reopened. At first they denied it without reason and again said send an ID so I sent the same one and again got denied. So I replied with an email asking if the picture was too blurry or what was wrong. They replied a day or two later apologizing for the inconvenience and opened up my account unchanged.
