When Cops Become Criminals: Arrests of HPD Officers Point to a ‘Culture of Corruption’

Quote
Since 2010, at least three dozen police officers have been arrested, charged or convicted of crimes ranging
from drunken driving and tampering with government records to sex assault and extortion. Many of them are
still with the department.

Former Honolulu Police Chief Boisse Correa witnessed first-hand how corruption can permeate the ranks of
the Honolulu Police Department.

Correa was chief in 2006 when five of his officers were caught providing protection to illegal gambling and
cockfighting operations on Oahu’s North Shore.

The scandal was far-reaching. More than 35 people were indicted, including an FBI secretary who was tipping
off her drug dealer boyfriend.

Correa told the local press it was “a dark day” for HPD. He then embarked on a crusade to beef up the
department’s internal affairs division as well as implement other measures that he believed would hold officers
more accountable.

If they are actually being arrested then is there really that much corruption? I mean if the crimes were all covered up then sure but if the cops are being arrested then that is a different story. I wouldn't consider just anytime a cop does something stupid corruption though. We do need to ensure that people are held accountable for their actions.

Chief Kealoha has got to go. You would think the corrupt city officials would realize he's a time bomb that will eventually take some of them down as well.

Why do you say that? Has he been protecting officer or do you just think he isn't doing enough to combat corruption?

You should read the whole article.

ARREST does not constitute PUNISHMENT.

There are plenty who have charges dropped, given a baby slap on the wrist, cleared by the Chief due to "insufficient evidence" even though the victims received reparations, or are given the option to resign to avoid public knowledge of the Cop's actions.  No transparency, not accountability, and not requirement to report the details and results of investigations to the public.

Ethics probes, FBI investigations, misconduct coverups, etc....The guy is getting sloppy. We all expect a certain amount of corruption but his profile is getting to high and eventually something is going to stick. If the department wants to keep their double standard of harsh punishments for citizens and slap-on-the-wrist-for-cops culture they need to retire this guy and find a new friendly face to hide their thin blue linen closet from public scrutiny.

I think the department is moving towards that direction. Maybe not as fast as we all would like but I would bet it is in a better shape than it was ever before within that regard.

I expect there would be no corruption and not just a "certain amount". Nobody should be above the law. But I agree this guy has to go. Reminds me of "Slick Willie".  :geekdanc: :geekdanc: :geekdanc:

The public records law exemption, and how hard HPD and SHOPO keep fighting for it, already tells you there's a culture of corruption and secrecy to keep a lid on it.

Only the high profile stuff comes out.
And if there's that much high profile crap happening, you can only imagine how much buried crap there is.

And I agree about Kealoha.

I can't tell if he is worse or the same as the guys before him, but he sure is more stupid than they are/were.
