Military Shipping won't allow ammo...
« on: September 19, 2015, 12:38:19 AM »
Hello everyone,

So I am in the process of separating from the military and scheduled my HHG (house hold goods) pickup. One thing not allowed was ammunition. I would bring it on the plane but, it is a good amount. I don't want to sell but can if I need to. Anyone know the weight for ammo on a flight? I guess I'll weigh my ammo soon lol. Any solutions or alternatives to selling would be great, thanks guys.

Each airline has their own policy. Been a while but Alaska used to be 50lbs domestic and 12lbs international.

IATA allows 11lbs, to which most airline are adhering by. Only Alaska Airlines allow up to 50lbs. The FAA does not regulate ammo.

No other good options.  If you have a pallet of ammo you could ship it and the hazmat fees won't be so bad.  Have each family member or friends bring over their 11lbs limit.  That's about your only options besides selling it here.

Since you would not get in trouble with your command, your ammo might get lost in the bottom of your tools. pots and pans, or buried in the center of boxes of clothing.  Mine sure did when I moved here from the mainland.  Not like they X-ray shipping containers.

Have you weighed the ammo?  How much are you talking about?

kinda hard to do if the movers pack you out which is the norm. it could be possible though you'd be surprised how far plate lunches and green bottles will go so the movers don't see thinks going in the boxes. wrap the ammo in nondescript packaging or in gift wrap.

Most moving companies will load "Packed by owner" boxes.  They have no idea what is in those boxes, nor do they look.
They also not insured.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the feedback. I will weigh it and list out what Brands, and quantity tomorrow. I would like to keep it but if I must sell I guess that works.

+1 This! I wish I had done this when I moved. I didn't know any better at the time.

You have family relocating with you?  Each person can take 11 pounds.  My non-common-core math training tells me you'll be able to divide 30 pounds by 3 people quite easily.

Don't forget the packaging rules.  Original factory box, or something like that?

Any factory box is ok.  Just can't have loose rounds.  The plastic boxes for reloads and bulk are fine.  Cardboard carton with the plastic tray is good, too.

Shipping containers are x-rayed.  Homeland Security has trucks with portable x-ray units that can scan a container on the dock.  I highly doubt that an ammo stash will trigger a search though.

My company developed the X-Ray and radiation detection technology used at ports and elsewhere in response to 9/11.

Leidos used to be SAIC, a government contractor mainly for DoD projects.  Hawaii Energy, the company I support  now, is a subsidiary of Leidos.
