Counterfeits and fakes
« on: October 26, 2015, 10:33:24 PM »
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this thread, but I feel this must be put out there. I have just been ripped off by a member on this forum who sold an item thought to have been genuine, but turning out to be a counterfeit. I took it to a friend who has the same model to compare and found it to be anything but. So I took to the internet to research if there were any variants and found that mine was absolutely fake. Although knowing that it is my responsibility to be wary of such things, I feel robbed. And I also feel it is my duty to write this post. I dont know if there are steps to take, legal or otherwise, but I choose not to out the seller. Just want to put it out there. Be aware of these counterfeits and fakes, fellow honorable 2A members. That is all...

A public forum post is not going to get much done.  Once he reads this, he'll say you should have come talk to him about it rather than make a public stink.

Try that route.  Maybe he had to go to bed early tonight :)

Using accusations like "ripped off" won't help you.  Try to work it out first.  if you can't get it refunded in a reasonable amount of time, then it's a rip-off.  Until then, for all you know, it was a surprise to the seller as well.

Take a breath, keep documentation, and be polite.  Pissing off the seller won't help.

If you could articulate that the seller knew it was fake but told you it was real then you could make a police report. It is called criminal simulation.

As others have said the seller may not have known it was counterfeit.  Contact the seller for a refund, if he/she is indeed fraudulent then let the rest of the community know so we don't have the same experience with the seller.

It is equally useful in securing meat for the table, destroying group enemies on the battlefield, and resisting tyranny. In fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, since a citizenry armed with rifles simply cannot be tyrannized."

Good you brought this subject up. Make as many people aware as possible so this happens less-often in the future.

I know there are fake accessories out there, but i would not know how to spot one

Give the seller a reasonable amount of time to respond and make right.  If he/she doesn't  correct the mistake then I would out him/her and maybe a fellow forum member will know who he or she is and talk some sense into him/her.

Screw that.  If someone sold me fake stuff the emails/PMs would be all over this forum.  If it turned out he didn't know, I'd apologize, but if not.............

Details would go a long way if you're seeking advice or assistance with this.  I'm sure just about everyone here would help if they could, but it's near impossible with a post that is equivalent to calling 911 and saying "I've been robbed, help!" then hanging up.

It would be very helpful if you posted the name of this person. The reason I say this is that you don't know how many more fakes of this and/or other items he/she may have. If you help just one other forum member from getting ripped off it will be worth all trouble you will go through. And if you don't, and another forum member gets ripped off, then couldn't some of the blame be on you? Just asking....  :shaka:

There is also the "Trade Count" link showing right underneath a person's profile name.

Knowingly selling counterfeits is illegal.  Obviously you don't know whether the seller knew, but you can still report the transaction to the manufacturer or local authorities.  You could also use that threat to leverage a refund.  If the guy was legit, he'd give you one.  Pretty damn shady to do otherwise...
