Was at WGS today and Joe said they have to move out by end of the month from Hawaii Kai location.   They will move to Sand Island Road (the beginning part on the KKHD side across from the old Kilgo's).

Well bother.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

I hate to say this but I doubt they will stay in business for long once they move. I believe that with their prices it was the convenience factor that keeps people going there. If it were not for the fact that I believe in spreading my funds around to all the LGS I would not buy much there. The thing I hate to see is that they have the largest inventory of reloading supplies and reloading equipment on the island. Another big thing I can say for WGS is that they have a vast inventory of .22 ammo and other ammunition not found any where else on this island. And for that a lot of us will suffer if they go out of business.

I could certainly be wrong and I hope I am wrong because I really like Joe and Henry. And I hate to see an LGS go under. I wonder if their hours are going to stay the same as the range hours?

That sucks.  I wish I had more disposable income when I lived near there and the wife worked around the corner at the hair salon.

Joe was always doing a great business and it was a gathering spot for kindred spirits.

When I had a range nearby, I had no money to buy guns to go shooting, now I have a bit of money, but no range to go shooting.

The success of retail is that they have to price accordingly. I patron WGS as it is on my way home after the range but I can find better prices elsewhere. Their prices don't reflect what the market is. Another factor is that their place is a mess almost like Young Guns. They have lots of stuff crammed into a tight space. Also who is the other older gentleman that is there? Does he work there? I recognize Joe & Henry but there is an older guy that seems to hang out and help out once in awhile. He talked to me like a schoolkid once explaining how the reload process works.
I hope they move to a bigger place with aisles.
Young Guns could benefit from organizing their stuff better. Feels like WalMart in the wee hours of the night. At least WalMart organizes their stuff on shelves for the next day.
My opinion.

My guess is that Bishop Estates did not renew their lease.

Makiki would have been a more ideal location than Sand Island, for conveince wise. But J. Hara is in that neighborhood.

Joe said something about BE switching them to a percentage rent lease last time I was there 3 weeks ago.

I talked to Joe at the gun show, they just jacked the rent too high for it to make sense. He's a smart guy. He knows the business climate, and will change as needed to keep things going. Rent in sand island should be considerably less than in Hawaii Kai. His hours will have to change but I'm sure he's taken that into account as well. Really just sad that there will no longer be the "relief valve" there when you're on your way to the range and realize you've forgotten or are short on something you need. WGS has filled this niche nicely for many years. I'll miss having the guys around.

Joe was actually trying to secure that open spot in Waimanalo Shopping Center, but the company wasn't having it.

If people want to try and help Joe/Henry out and keep a semi-convenient to the range location open, I suggest we start writing to the company that handles that lease in Waimanalo and getting organizations like HRA and HDF involved to help spread the word.

I can get the contact info for the company if people want to do that.

And yes: Waimanalo needs a gunshop.

PS: Joe should have scooped up the old KFC location in Niu Valley while it was still available. Could have had drive thru ammo!

This just came to mind:

This is actually bad news guys. Last I saw Big Al, Joe was looking to take over the helm and provide the services that Al currently does, so long as he didn't tarnish Al's precedent of fair prices on transfers.

Looks like no more transfers on the Windward Side  :(

What about that shopping area by Kalama Valley where Thai Valley Cuisine and some kind of auto repair shop are located?

As far as I know, it has lots and lots of parking space and I believe that there are some empty commercial space in that area.

The  3-4 times that I did stop by that store was on the way to Koko head. Only because they were on the way and the only store that was open. Price was the highest I've paid on the island and the service was the worst. Good luck in a new space

I was told that Joe checked out everything available in Hawaii Kai but they "can't  (won't?) come to an agreement". Same as Waimanalo. :(

That's Ron I'm unsure if he's a paid worker there but he does help out at the shop a lot.

Wow seriously?  You'd think that the land owner of that kinda empty shopping center would be desperate to fill the vacancies.

Possible anti-gun attitude in Hawaii Kai retail spaces?
