Assault Pistol to legal Carbine
« on: November 03, 2015, 08:44:56 PM »
This project started out as a IO Inc imported polish PPS43c , semi pistol model. Because of the import ban on non sporting rifle, these are unavailable as an import carbine from Poland.
In order to have a PPS43 styled SMG in Hawaii and also to allow the stock to unfold, several modification are required to meet both federal laws and HRS.

A picture of the original pistol from most retailers. The stock is permanently folded and approved by the ATF for import as a pistol. Mine came with 4 10rd mags, FFL'd  to PA.  (Centerfire refused to sell me 32rd mags because my billing address was in Hawaii.   :wtf:  )

In order to be legal rifle (922r)  that is non importable, it may contain no more than 10 imported parts. The PPS 43 has 13 countable parts from a list of 20. Three parts must be replaced with US parts.

(1)   Receiver
(2)  Barrel  US
(3)
(4)  Trunnion US
(5)
(6)   Bolt
(7)
(8.)
(9)
(10)  Trigger housing
(11)  Trigger
(12)  Hammer
(13)
(14)  Disconnector
(15)  Buttstock
(16)  Pistol grip US
(17)
(18)  Magazine Body
(19)  Magazine Follower
(20)  Magazine Floorplate

Here is a new US made barrel with a US trunnion.  These  are available from several vendor on the internet or gun shows. Both were stamped "US" to avoid confusion with original SMG parts, and cold blued to match the black color of the PPS finish.
The new barrel is chambered in 9mm as opposed to the original 7.25x25, it is also 16.2" to make it a legal carbine.

Firstly, I removed the front end of the gun. It was done by milling of all the the rivets at the "hump" (center area).  This is required to remove the original trunnion, and the barrel was removed by striking out the barrel pin. The original trunnion base can be reused as it is not a 922(r) part. All the rivet holes were tapped to allow machine screws to reinstall the receiver.

At this time we can grind of the weld and allow the stock to unfold. The imported pistol has a smaller hole to prevent the button to be pushed in, the hole would need to be enlarged to allow the button to be depressed. I had counter sinked the hole with a step drill and allow the button to sit flush with the receiver.

The PPS43 flash suppressor was chopped off and hole enlarged to allow the new barrel to fit.

Mostly assembled and ready to test fire soon...............

US pistol grips coming soon.

That is a mini uzi with the 18" barrel ,Action Arms imported them in the 80's. Vector also assembled a few in 2000 from surplus AA receivers. Others were cut down Group Ind. receivers.

The micro uzi or uzi pistols came with the shortest recirver, and thinner gauge steel.
These are recognizable by the different trigger guard, pistol grips and no hand guards.

Parts are a bear to find.  Did some bubbaing to get it to work, still need to test it though.  Mags even harder to find.

Surplus IDF mags are plentiful, its the commercial imports with IMI markings that hard to find.

Problem was getting someone to send one, either blocked, or in a "parts kit"...

Maybe, I'll ask.  He already sourced a few, but maybe he wants more.  Thank you! :shaka:
