Moving to Oahu from mainland and have FN SCAR and FNS-9.
« on: November 24, 2015, 06:07:16 AM »
Hey guys,

So starting in February I will be joining the community for at least 3 years. I have SCAR 17s and FNS-9 that will be coming with and I am concerned mainly about the magazine sizes. The SCAR is 20rds and the FNS is 17. I currently only have 1 SCAR mag and 3 for FNS.

Will I be held up with these? Should I ship the magazines separately?

We are probably going to live out in town rather than on base.

I Appreciate any and all advice. Thanks in advance,

-Chris

Thanks for the info! Could I use this http://www.magazineblocks.com/magento/products/magblock-kits/pistols-3/fnh/fns-9-magblock-10-17-10-and-15-round-limiter.html ?

FN mags are pricey /sigh! I could perhaps buy the SCAR lower that can handle cheaper mags but at around $500, it would take a LONG time to recuperate the cost :). Don't see any other purpose for the lower that I am aware of.

has to be "not readily restorable" to standard capacity
that listing says can be epoxied
i'm not exactly sure what the current interpretation of "not readily restorable" is
someone should answer shortly

Welcome, good to have you!

Pistol mags are supposed to be permanently neutered to 10 rds.   If you ever needed to use the weapon for any legal purpose, don't let them be found to not be permanently neutered, would be considered a felony.
I know it's sickening..  sorry

Yuck...They are like $45 a pop for the FNS :( I guess I could buy a couple while I am in HI then sell them when I leave?

That would be a good option.

Don't waste money buying a bunch of neutered mags.

Just buy one FNS9 mag and don't bother selling it when you leave. Just keep it.

You have to register your firearms at Honolulu Police Department (or PD on the outer islands).  Here's more info on honolulu requirements: http://www.honolulupd.org/information/index.php?page=gunmain.  Also go over the gun laws on the HRA page http://hawaiirifleassociation.org/hawaii-gun-laws

Also the law for 10 round magazines:
(c)  The manufacture, possession, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer, or acquisition of detachable ammunition magazines with a capacity in excess of ten rounds which are designed for or capable of use with a pistol is prohibited.  This subsection shall not apply to magazines originally designed to accept more than ten rounds of ammunition which have been modified to accept no more than ten rounds and which are not capable of being readily restored to a capacity of more than ten rounds.

Any person violating subsection (c) shall be guilty of a misdemeanor except when a detachable magazine prohibited under this section is possessed while inserted into a pistol in which case the person shall be guilty of a class C felony.

This is very gray to me: "which are not capable of being readily restored to a capacity of more than ten rounds." So if I get a temporary block for my mags that I can not "readily" modify back to stock I should be ok...That is how I interpret this.

Probably not a good idea to interpret or to dink with your factory mags (they recommend riveting the mags to comply). If you're in a "free state", visit some gun shows. There's always someone dumping factory low capacity stuff.

Hey guys just looking through my military moving documents. It appears I cannot have "privately owned live ammunition" in my household goods move...Any one else transfer out to Hawaii with ammunition? I have about 400 .308 and 250 9mm rounds I planned on bringing with me.

Depends on the airline.
I think Hawaiian Air was 11 pounds or something like that.  That's not that much.  :(

Ill be flying Hawaiin Airlines out of San Diego. Looked on their site but didnt see anything about weight...I don't have a ton of ammo. Ill weigh it when I get home. .308 is heavy!

As mentioned above most airlines allow 11 lbs of ammo per traveler, Alaska is the exception they allow 50 lbs.

Keep in mind that this ammo needs to be in its manufacturer packaging. Depending on packaging 200 rounds of .308 will be between 10.5 and 11 lbs.

each passenger is allowed 11lbs, a seatless infant  is also a passenger, however the airline a charge a fee for additional baggage is not included in the ticketed contract.

2 x 11lbs can be located in the same baggage. that's 22lbs of the allocated 25lbs for standard luggage .
