Similar caliber and magazines might be a good idea.  You could look into a .40 cal glock with a 9mm conversion barrel to use what you already have.

On the other hand, a gun for each type of the most common caliber would also be just as good a reason.  In that case, a 45 would give you 9, 40 and 45.

I think, therefore I am armed.

Ask a question like that and you'll get a thousand opinions.
Here's one...
For home defense, get the same gun that hpd uses and use the same ammo.

revolver, preferably something in .357

If you can afford it, GP100.

If you want to save some cash, Taurus Model 66

I only own 9mm lol....

Since you are using 9mm already, stick with that caliber.

It would be good to know if you have a budget in mind.

I think it's hard to go wrong with a Glock, but I found other brands to be more to my liking.  Glock 17 or 19 would be my recommendations in that make.

A Sig Sauer P226 or P320 would be my top two recommendations.  The P226 will run a couple hundred more than the Glock, and the P320 in the same ballpark as the Glock..

My daughter likes her new EAA Witness Pavona.  She has a tough time with semi-auto pistols as she limp-wrists them and causes malfunctions.  The EAA seems to have fixed all of that for her with a slide that's easier to rack and recoil that doesn't "break" her wrist backward.  It's her new Concealed Carry pistol now (no, not in Hawaii!).  Cost of the EAA is also cheaper than the Glocks.

I'd recommend getting something that EVERY adult in the household is comfortable and proficient with - you never know who is going to be the one.

you can load it with 38sp or 38sp+p, so it wont overpenetrate.

You could save the money from buying a third gun and spend the money on training.

Thank you for all the great suggestions. Just wanted to share the reason I'm asking for help on this I bought my first gun in June of this year. I bought a glock 35 and change the barrel from the 40 to a nine because my wife is more comfortable with this caliber.so it was kind of a gun we shared. But after so many times going to koko head together we kind of got tired taking turns. So I bought a 9mm Springfield 1911 on Black Friday but when I went to hpd I was told about my Kaiser insurance.so with some help from a member of this site I found a outside doctor that will see me. With that being said my wife told me since I'm paying for a out side doctor to clear me I should and could get another hand gun to go with the doctors clearance so I wouldn't have to go again to see him. So when the wife says get another gun who I'm I to complain lol. But now I just don't know which gun to get.

Yes that is on my list to become a better shooter but my wife told me to get another gun and take them both one time to hpd since I have Kaiser insurance and I had to pay for a outside doctors clearance. But I'm definitely looking into that. I work with someone who is a instructor don't know if anyone here knows him his name is Cliff goo
