KHON might twist this around and make it not look too nice for gun owners...  I can see it now...   "Gun owners refuse to get mental evals!"

They'll certainly make us look bad if we say nothing.

Nobody is "refusing" anything. This needs to be about the state, via HPD, putting the burden of proof on the citizen.

That is illegal and unconstitutional. In the absence of any evidence, the government cannot deny you your Constitutional rights because someone else refuses to cooperate with them.

IMHO, this is a situation where we need to have either the HRA, HDF, or even Mr. Holcomb speaking on the issue. There's only one chance to make a first impression.

I see this as a case of HPD unfairly and unevenly applying new policies to some applicants but not others.  The law says HPD must perform the background checks.  If they aren't getting what they want from the agencies they send inquiries to, it's not the applicant's responsibility to provide it.

The law says applicants must sign the medical records release.  The Chief of Police must perform the background check.  They should follow the law, not make new policy which burdens some applicants with additional requirements, financial costs, and personal time off work to complete the permit process.

Nice sugar coating.

Our judicial system is based on the presumption of innocence. The burden of proving otherwise rests with the state.

If their new policy is in conflict with the law, it is _______?  Anyone?

If they cannot get the information they want from a 3rd party, then insist the citizen provide said information, this is placing the burden of "proof" on _________? Anyone?

Has anyone seen the reporter at the range? KHON website  http://khon2.com/Brent-Remadna/ says he's from South Dakota and spent time in MIssissippi, so he might not be the liberal gun-hater that most 2A folks assume all reporters to be, with good reason. Just askin'

May not be, however, if you look at how the mainstream Hawaii media reports on the gun owning public, you'd realize even if the reporter is fair, the entire report may not be...

Just registered a rifle at hpd today.  The khon2.com news guy was interviewing people about the whole Kaiser and Straub medical thing.  So this is good news,  and I thought I would share.

Hope none of you crazies were there to get interviewed  ;D
"The rifle is a weapon. Let there be no mistake about that. It is a tool of power, and thus dependent completely upon the moral stature of its user. It is equally useful in securing meat for the table, destroying group enemies on the battlefield, and resisting tyranny. In fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, since a citizenry armed with rifles simply cannot be tyrannized."
