No, dish soap does not hurt the leaves. You have to use as 'pure' a soap as possible, so dawn scent free is the best.

The soap is necessary because it strips the smothers pests and helps penetrate the waxy coating of their exoskeletons, which allow organic pesticides to enter their body more readily.

You can also use diatomaceous earth, but that is pretty much a last resort for organic approaches, as it is indiscriminate.

Good to know.  Thanks!

Organic fertilizer go!

You don't need any right now unless you see deficiencies.

help.  what is this whitek stuff underneath the leaves.  it killed my bell pepper plant.

other than that the basil and the bok choy some leaves get those leaf crawler trails.

I get much better luck growing fruit than veggies.

The tunnel lines are leaf miners, the white spots are either mildew or white fly and the rot at the end of the leaf is likely blight.

mahalo Q.  I got these from home depot need to go back and get some sprays or something.  my Hawaiian chili plant has been cranking out the deadly little red beasties and looking forward to making makewatah and stuff :)

the white powder stuff is freaking flies I shook the leaf and a bunch flying around wtf where come from.  gonna' baggie that plant and sadly throw away.

giving a "coastal strawberry" plant a go and it's doing good.  I just hope not miniature decorative fruit instead of normal eating kind?  my kumquat tree the fruits look like olive size but this the first ones and the plant barely a foot tall.

If you ever run into problems with flies again, use 1-2 tbsp of dawn dish soap to 1L of water; spray top and bottom of leaves either before sun up or after the sun starts to set.

If that doesn't help. add equal ratio of pure neem oil to the mix.

If that still doesn't work, go to a pet or feed store and locate diatomaceous earth, and then apply with a plant duster. This must be used as a last resort as DE is indiscriminate and will kill beneficial insects as well.

I'm waiting for a recipe from the Korean Natural Farming system to be made available that is possible the safest and most effective insecticide that doubles as a fungicide as well.

The bottom leaves of my tomato plants are yellowing.  They get adequate water.

Bottom leaves are fine, as this is old growth.

Main thing is that the main leaves (that form the main section and/or canopy) are not yellowing.

Anyone know what's going on here?  The edges of my polebean leaves are drying up.  The dried portion are very dry and "crispy" feeling.  The inside of the same leaf feels almost normal.  It works its way from the rim of the leaves to the insides, as you can see in the 2 leaves in the back.

Thanks

Overwatering.

I can tell from the picture that the soil is drenched.

Did you add the aerating media like I told you? If not, straight compost will have a consistency of clay over time, only it will also retain water, causing root rot.

Over watering? Ok. I only water once a day in the mornings. I took the picture when I watered. In the morning before watering, if it didn't rain, the top layer of soil is kinda dry.

Did you add drainage/aerating media, i.e. cinder rocks?

It doesn't.

Whoever told you that lied to you, as menehune magic does not sell product mixed with cinder. They do, however, sell cinder on it's own.

So now you know what the problem is, I would recommend getting a soil moisture meter off amazon. Test both from the bottom and from the drainage holes in the bottom. Do not water unless the meter says it is dry.

Is black cinder different?  This is a picture of the Potting Mix from Menehune Magic.

Did you buy the bag or did you get bulk from the yard?

I assume you got it in bulk.

Anyway, the amount of cinders in the bagged product is very minimal.

You want a MINIMUM of 2:1 compost to drainage media.

Ahh ok.  That sounds like a lot.  I'll try cut back on watering.

And no... I have the bag product.

The dish soap doesn't harm the leaves?

I heard to use "Organic" soap which I will try next.,Instead of throwing out your white fly plants, just spray them "vigorously" with a hose to get rid of them
