Pegboards - wall anchors
« on: January 18, 2016, 04:26:26 PM »
I've spent a chunk of time this weekend looking online and in-stores for a suitable pegboard kit.

The plastic pegboards they sell on Amazon and ebay but none will ship to Hawaii.

Homedepot has the traditional MDF/pressed wood fiber pegboards but they are not in good shape, and I want a plastic or metal pegboard, not wood.

I found one seller that will ship a metal (galvanized steel) pegboard kit to Hawaii, but I would like to use plastic flex-lock J hooks, can the plastic peg-hooks be used on a metal pegboard?

Anyone have any pegboard experience?  plastic vs. metal panels?

Sorry, the only experience I have is with the pressed wood fiber type.

When you say they are not in good shape is it just cosmetic or is it more serious than that?

a lot of cosmetic scratches and beat up corners, as well as some edges cracked due to weakness from being so close to holes.

It's my last option if I can't decide on a metal panel.  Also would have to install furring strips for this type of panel.

Go metal, but prepare to pay a hefty price.

You can always paint the press wood pegboard which should make it a little more durable.

I have no idea where you might find a plastic one. If I really wanted a plastic one, I would just make it myself. Buy some acrylic, make a grid pattern and drill with the appropriate drill bit.

Buggah is cheap

By "cheap" do you refer to quality or price?

Price.

I'd go with plastic if you can afford it.

THANK YOU FOLKS I FOUND IT AT HOME DEPOT THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED, bought 4 panels, and saved a lot of time, hassle, and $$$

Now for picking the right wall anchor... because I will be fastening these to dry wall and don't want to find studs

1. I think my drywall is 1/2" to 5/8" thick but unsure... will a simple plastic expanding wall anchor suffice?  I will be hanging light knick-knacks and tools from the pegboard, definitely nothing as heavy as a cordless drill.

2. related bonus question: at a later time i will be attaching a tv wall mount with 4 attachment points for a 48" tv, weighing less than 50lbs, I want to attach it to drywall but can find a stud if need, what type of heavy duty anchor would I need to attach the mount + tv to drywall?

For the TV mount I would really find the studs and mount into them. But are lazy, I think these should suffice: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000BQR4XE/?tag=2ahawaii-20

Toggle bolts are another option if you want to skip finding the studs. They'll be slightly stronger.

When drilling into drywall for something heavy, read the packaged of the drywall anchors. They will say how much weight they can support.

Unless you mount a piece of wood between the studs and then the TV mount to that, the studs themselves are possibly going to not give you all 4 points you need to attach this thing.  Studs are usually 16" or 24 " apart, and wherever there is an original outlet.

So, if the mount is less than the span between studs, you can mount a board or some other underneath material between the studs to use, or you can attach one side to the stud and the other side to drywall using anchors.   The best anchors in my opinion are the snap toggles.  Every other anchor tends to crumble the drywall until it's too loose to hold especially if you move the TV much at all.

Maybe you'll be lucky and the mounting bracket is wide enough to hit two studs.  That would be the best of all solutions.

"don't want to find studs" ?
Hell the mount probably weighs 10-15 #s.

If you need incentive to find the studs, stand facing the wall where the TV ill be mounted and envision that expensive piece of entertainment equipment hitting the floor.
