I support the right to open carry, on principal, but I think it's a poor idea if you're attempting to mitigate risk. It's even worse if you're going to carry in a holster with no retention devices.

FWIW
I never understood why anyone would want to open carry.

I'd have to agree. Open carry laws are great for protecting hunters and CCW holders if their weapon shows by accident from overzealous police. Open carrying in an urban area, just because, is needlessly drawing attention to yourself. Not the good kind of attention either.

I think open carry is a really bad idea. It is risky, it isn't aesthetically pleasing, and only has a place in very limited situations. Namely the only time open carry makes sense is if you are someone who will be a target anyway. Cops in uniform for example, uniformed military, etc.

"one of them demanded his gun. The other then grabbed the gun from the holster and pushed him to the ground."
Unarmed men stole his gun ?

Obviously NOT paying attention to his surroundings
lack of proper "public" holster
lack of proper CC/OC retention training
etc...,etc.... etc..

It isn't hard to take someone's gun away, especially if the gun is not being carried in a retention holster. There is a reason why LE considers gun grabs a deadly force situation.
Usually if the aggressor is younger, stronger, or has a substantial advantage of empty hand skills, the gun take away is not difficult.

I'll agree with you that situational awareness is king, but most people aren't condition yellow/red 100% of the time when they're outside of the home. That's one of the reasons why I feel open carry is a poor idea.

Anyone who answers "I'd just shoot him" is not aware of how difficult it is to struggle for a gun, and probably hasn't received or taken part in any serious combatives training with weapons retention.

1. That is one reason I do not open carry anymore...
2. I pack two pistols, one in my pocket ready to go...
