Electronic Ear Muffs
« on: February 18, 2016, 09:35:54 PM »
Anyone have any experience using Electronic Ear Muffs?   Been looking at the Howard Leight Impact Sport.  Reason I'm considering is I can't hear very well with my current setup, Surefire Ear Plugs and Peltor Muffs.

Appreciate your feedback.   Mahalo!

I have the Peltor electronics and got the Howard Leight's a few months ago and that is what I use now. I like them better and have no reason to try anything else.

I use the impact Sport.   They fold up small for storage .  The Peltors are good too.

I've been using the HL's for a while, and they're very good for the price.  Good thing about them is they have an audio input, so I connect my cell phone to it and run my shot timer app.

Disadvantage to them is they are on the low end of sound blocking.  Fine for outdoor ranges, but need to wear plugs too when indoors or around louder stuff.

I have the impact sport and loved them so much I bought a second and third pair. The third pair ended up being a gift.

I usually use double ear protection with the sure fire foam tipped plugs and the filters uncapped. I then turn the volume on the impact sports to the max amplification. This gives me the best protection and still allows me to have a conversation.

PELTOR 3M TEP100 electronic ear plugs = AWESOME.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00PABOJ0Q/?tag=2ahawaii-20

Had them only a short while but they have been working awesome.  No interference with check weld with these.

with the "skull screw" inserts they attenuate 30db.

But new stuff comes out every year.
The Howard leight that I bought back then still works fine.
I'm pretty sure the batteries never needed to be changed.
Some of the soft covering on the headband is deteriorating, probably not from wearing.
More likely from hanging it up on any convenient place.
That makes me think that ear muffs should have a separate loop or hook to use for hanging.
See the pic.

I use MSA/Sordin Supreme X ear pro with the gel cups.  The gel cups are awesome.  The unit is actually on the heavier side (when compared to other electronic ear pro), but with the gel cups, I don't really notice them.  No problems with cheek weld for me, even when shooting my Rem 700, or problems with seal around the legs of my sunglasses/eye pro.  They are pricey, but they are very good.  My current pair is about 6 years old now and it's showing signs of deterioration from salt air and sweat, so I might have to look into replacing it soon.

I also have a pair of Peltor 6s.  I haven't used it much, but from what I recall, it was good.  It's light and the version I have can fold up into a pretty compact size.

Both don't have the highest dB attenuation rating, but enough for me.

Hmm, I might have to look into those.  While I like the MSA/Sordins, good in ear electronic ear pro would be helpful.  Can't use the headband ear pro with larger hats that I'd like to use when I have to be out in the sun all day.

MSA/Sordin Supreme X Pro with gel inserts are my preference.  Some have had issues with the electronics.   Very comfortable all day.  I also have several Howard Leight Sport Impacts.  Work great for budget earpro.  Used them a lot in the rain no issues.  Downside as mentioned they are not the quietest due mostly to the seal.  They don't seal as well around certain eye pro and the ear pieces get very hard over long use of sweat, heat etc.   I still have a set from about 5-6 years ago that is still working.

I'm using the Sordin Supreme Pro X with the gel seals too.  Super comfortable and perfect for outdoors and I add plugs for indoor use.  Shop around online and you can find them for decent prices, but never cheap. I got mine from Double Alpha Academy.

I replaced the gel pads on mine last month.  This set lasted since I got this unit, which is about 5 years now.  The directions say to replace the gel pads every 6 months for daily use.  I certainly don't use mine daily, but still happy with how long they lasted.  The tops of the pads seemed to have deteriorated from exposure to sunlight/UV and got brittle.  I started seeing these yellow/orangeish clumps of stuff here and there.  Looked like snot.  Haha.  I eventually realized it was leaking from the ear pads.

My headset is all beat up too.  The wiring are all wrapped with electrical tape as the original shielding deteriorated a while back.  Trying to eek out every last second from this unit until I have to replace it.

There, fixed it for ya...

Some of the soft covering on the headband is deteriorating, probably from not having hair on my head and providing a cushion between the headband and my head.

Just ordered a new set of MSA/Sordin Supreme Pro-X from SRS.  The one that I am currently using is slowly deteriorating.  The plastic shielding of the wiring has slowly been breaking apart and more and more electrical tape is needed to protect the wiring.  My contact at SRS said that they can repair, but that the replacement is labor intensive and would probably run around $150 plus shipping, so almost the cost of a new headset.  This one has lasted well over 5 years with a good amount of use, so I am happy.  That and I got it on a good deal at about half of what they go for now.  They are excellent quality and I don't mind spending more for them.
