30-30 WIN reloading
« on: February 24, 2016, 08:22:35 PM »
Any members reload for 30-30 win?   I plan on loading 150 gr. RN with BL(C)2 in once fired Hornady and FC brass.   Only reason for the BL(C)2 is it's a ball powder and I have enough on hand.
What powders do you use and recommend for range use?   Will use in a lever rifle.

Mahalo p.m.
Nosler says IMR4895 most accurate.   Don't remember seeing that powder here..

I've loaded 30-30 with IMR 3031 and 150 gr. RN or FP bullets.  They're just for plinking, function testing, etc.  I've got factory loads for hunting, if I ever go hunting again.

Just use data from a good manual and don't try to hot rod it.

I plan to start low and work up to test function but plan to settle on a mid load for punching paper.   Agree on using factory for everything else.   Before getting into 30-30, I thought that ammo was everywhere and cheap.   Guess since it's an old caliber price is not cheap and not plentiful.

BTW, you ever load 30-30 with plated bullets?  If so how are they for plinking?
I see Xtreme plated bullets have good prices for 150 gr.  FP 30-30.

Nope--I've never tried them.  I've picked a few boxes of .30 cal bullets over the years and I just load what I've got on hand.  BTW I double checked some reloads and realized that I didn't use 3031, sorry!  I loaded IMR 4350 (again, what I had on hand)with 150 grain flat points (and some with RN).  So, there's a lesson for all of us--always write down your load, even if it's just a few loads in a ziploc bag.  Good luck with loading!

BLC-2 is listed in the manual I use (Hornady) but I've never tried it.  The 30-30 is a pretty easy cartridge to load.  I've got a lot of mixed brass so I trim them to length (the first time they're reloaded) so that the crimp is consistent.  The brass can be kind of thin on some headstamps, so don't be surprised if you lose a few cases to cracks in the neck/shoulder area.  I shoot a Winchester 94, which doesn't have as strong a lockup as a Marlin, so that might account for a few of the cracked cases as well.

Like I've mentioned, I shoot factory loads if I'm hunting or if I run out of plinking loads and are just too damned lazy to set up the press and load a few boxes.  My plinking loads are at least 10% below the book maximum.  When I make up plinking loads I like to use the Lee powder scoops--with the right technique it's pretty consistent.  For other rifle loads (7mm, 270) I weigh the charges.

Thanks for all your input jc.
You are correct in always labeling load data

I've used BLC-2, IMR 3031, Leverevolution, and a few others-- I'll have to check my data. I do remember 180gr spitzers being the most accurate and 150gr plated FN (Xtreme?) being less than average. You can try Roy's Fishing Supplies, a few years back they had Federal 130 or 150 gr ammo for $22, $14 when on sale. Have not been there recently. Prime Sports on Nimitz may have powder for you, seen stuff there when others were sold out.

should be able to find a workable load using any of the following powders
h 335
w 748
imr 4895
h 4895
imr 4064

plated bullets should be loaded down to cast velocity

Mahalo guys for your feedback and the headsup on plated bullets.  I was able to get a lb. of IMR4895 so will use this and also load some with BL(C)2 to compare.
Bullets I'm using is Hornady 150 gr. RN .308 dia. which look similar to the Hornady White tail that Sports Auth. sells.  These white tail rounds functioned and sighted in fine using Skinner winged front and rear sights.  Aperture size  .155" @50 yds.
Don't know why I'm getting the bug for lever rifles.  Even found myself looking at the 1895 in 45-70 (LOL); it all started with the little 1894C in .357 mag.
