From the HRA alert earlier today:

"Over a thousand messages were sent to legislators asking them to oppose the anti-gun bills moving in the legislature."

Could someone please clarify this statistic? One thousand separate individuals sent emails? Or what? I myself sent over 300 emails (NRA-ILA to all legislators, and separately my own arguments against each of the three bills to every legislator), so I'm wondering what the "thousand messages" means. If they got emails from a thousand different people, and still voted almost unanimously, how many do they have to get to consider the wishes of the electorate? Thanks.

Take Action kicks Ass !

How do we set up something like this ?
Anyone know how ?

2AHawaii. Figure this out so we can do it from this forum. :D
(Easy for me to say.) ]

GOA does it too on a National basis. I am sure it is a feature that can be worked out with those who set up forums
I use it all the time and I know the letters are getting there as I keep getting the canned responses. GOA sets it up so that you can write your own or modify theirs to fit your circumstances, or tone them
down a bit.
Anyway, I sent mine to all sens and reps, a personal to my Rep Sam Kong.
We gotta fight together.

I never wrote anything at all about "how it should be" (or "shouldn't be").

Ummm, yes you did:
Quote
Why should "our side" have to produce enormous numbers to hold sway, while "the other side" need not produce such numbers, or any numbers at all (according to you) and that "no (or almost no) visible public support" rules the roost?

Please explain that in the context of "consent of the governed". Or any context at all.

If that doesn't try to express how the system should work, then I don't know what does...

Quote
YOU'RE the one writing about how more gun owners SHOULD get involved, yet you have no plan at all except to "bitch and moan" about it and tell them they should be "ashamed" to not do what you want them to do, even though there is no evidence that if they did what you attempt to shame them in to doing that it would have a beneficial outcome. You're hypothesizing about "how it should be" ("if "enough" of you were "active" legislation would go our way") without any data to support your claim.

Yep, more gun owners should get involved and those that aren't should be ashamed of themselves, especially if they are apt to bitch and moan about the current conditions as they pertain to limiting gun rights in Hawaii. All the evidence I need to show that increased participation is much more likely to result in favorable outcomes with regards to these onerous bills is the difference in outcome when the participation was greater. The response to the attempt to remove the limited liability protections from NRA instructors should serve to remind everyone what is possible when lots of people work collaboratively and show the lawmakers that we have numbers on our side. There are no guarantees that increased participation will get us what we want, and I never said it would, but it is guaranteed that with minimal numbers legislators will continue to ignore us and think they can vote any way they want without repercussions. And, trying to illicit empirical data from events that didn't happen (much like trying to figure out DGUs when no shots are fired) is problematic.

Quote
Show me the percentage of gun owners in the voting age population of every Hawaii legislative district. Show me the percentage of gun owners compared to non-gun owners that are registered voters in every Hawaii legislative district. Now, show me how you're going to get whatever percentage of them you claim is necessary to accomplish your goals if they are active, active. Otherwise all you're doing is "bitching and moaning" and spewing hypotheticals about "how it should be".

Now you're just being argumentative and stupid. You don't need complicated and time consuming studies, as you suggest, to know that the majority of gun owners did not participate in efforts to influence legislators. Period. Whatever the number of gun owners we have in Hawaii, the fact is that those that did participate in the process are in the minority, and by all best estimates, a very significant minority. Trying to "study" the numbers to determine what percentage of these gun owners would be necessary to accomplish the stated goals is just a diversionary tactic to get off the fact that most of Hawaii's gun owners are apathetic and that, in general, we would have a better outcome if more of them became involved. That's not bitching and moaning about how things should be, it just stating the cold hard facts about our political system as it is now.

Aloha e

Thanks for your email. I do support Second Amendment Rights and voted in opposition to SB 2629 in the Judiciary and Labor Committee on March 30th. However, I did vote in favor of HB 2632 and HB 625 after weighing all the testimony.

I’ll keep your input in mind as these bills continue being debated here at the Legislature.

Me ke aloha pumehana,

Senator Mike Gabbard

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I do appreciate your support with your opposition to SB 2629,
I would like to once again share my thoughts on HB 2632 and HB 265

HB 2632 is very vague and over reaching and would result in the loss of rights for receiving hospitalization not requiring diagnosis and has no opportunity for due process or appeal, The way the bill is written whilst some one is receiving care the police will be able to seize firearms immediately from a persons home without warrant or order from a court, Even whilst under treatment which would result in medical clearance at its end.
Any removal of rights should be the result of diagnosis and due process, not solely on the bases of receiving care.

HB 265 ll, Loss of rights is meant for our most serious of crimes in the cases of stalking and harassment their is already laws in place that would protect the victims.  Hawaii's TRO laws remove a persons right for a period for up to 1 year when evidence is presented that shows that they pose a risk to another safety.

Thank you for your support and i hope moving forward you will continue to do so.

Several of these bills have now been sent to "conference committees". See the following for commentary about this process in general, and specifically how no public input is allowed. They can do whatever they want to do and don't even have to pretend that the wishes of "the people" are considered.

See the article for active links to cited evidence/references.

http://www.hawaiifreepress.com/ArticlesMain/tabid/56/ID/17318/Shady-Dealings.aspx

Excerpts:

Shady Dealings

Liberal and progressive Democrats have never missed an opportunity to alienate voters.

Recall that it was this very same leadership team of liberal Democrats that promised transparency in government:

The most critical important check on government is an informed and involved citizenry. At minimum, residents should vote. We will work to facilitate, rather than hamper, public involvement in government.

— followed time and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again where they betrayed the transparency and good government that they promised.

This move is part-and-parcel of the liberal agenda – to alienate moderate and conservative voters so that louder, more liberal and progressive voices are able to monopolize government.

I got the same note from Gabbard. Now I know it was a canned reply. Thought maybe I was special!
Notable by it's absence was a reply from My own District senator
.
Suspect he was dining with Shimabukuro
