Moving items inter-island?
« on: April 13, 2016, 05:06:08 PM »
I am wanting to ship items from Oahu to the Big Island, more specifically in a shipping container, 20' or 40', not sure yet.  I have shipped items via Young Brothers that were crate or vehicles, but not a container.  I will be calling YB in the morning but it is my understanding that they do have containers for customer use, but I don't think they deliver or pick up the container.  I really need another shipping container, so I may just buy one that still has a valid certification and ship it.  So if anyone has experience with this, about how much was the fee for the container and shipping cost, but also who did you use for container delivery and pick up and the cost of that?  Or any other options that people have used?

Anyone got connections with a trucking guy, or someone that sells containers?   ;)

^^^You can fill their G-vans but I doubt they would let you take them to do that.

I see PODs containers in state now, possible to go through them?  They would drop off and pick up on both ends?

Thanks for the input GZire.  I got in touch with YB and they sent me the information and costs for all their different containers and ports.

For anyone interested this is the info that I got.  You can load items at YB up to the 20' container, but may take them "off site".  The 40' container MUST be loaded "off site" and they do not deliver containers so you need your own transportation company that is properly insured for hauling a YB container.  They only ship port to port so any delivery is up to the customer to arrange.  One thing I did not get a reply on is if there is some sort of deposit for taking any of the storage units "off site".

Sounds like a hassle. What about using PODS door to door?  Not sure about the cost for either route.
I think, therefore I am armed.

When I moved from OAHU to the Big Island, I used Island Movers.  They picked up a 20 ft container from YB, delivered it to my home in Kailua and I had 2 days to load it.  They picked it up, delivered to YB and had HITCO in Hilo pick it up from YB and deliver it to my home in Fern Forest.  You have 2 days to unload.  HITCO then picked up the empty container and took it back to YB.  All of this cost me $1500.   YB portion of this bill was $704.  PODS does not deliver on the Big Island.  You have to go to their terminal in Hilo and unload there.  That wasn't going to work for me, as I had stuff that needed a forklift and the PODS container could not handle the weight.

Thanks RSN.  I am guessing that they dropped the container on the ground and it was not left on a chassis?  Was the 2 days for loading / unloading a set time frame for YB or just what you opted for?  Did you need to put down a deposit?

The container was left on a chassis.  That is why YB gives you only 2 days, which is enough time if you have everything already boxed.  You can keep it longer but it will cost around $50 a day or so.  Leaving it on the chassis was no problem for me as I had forklifts on both ends, which enabled me to load and unload the containers myself in the allotted time frame.  YB has lots of containers, but only a limited number of chassis and they want them back ASAP.

Forgot to answer your question about the deposit.  No deposit required.  Island Movers took a credit card and ran the charge after everything was done.
