I haven't tried baiting, luring, trapping, etc.  However, I know that they are damn smart.  For example, they know places on the golf course when people typically have food and they'll be very active there.  I've had a bunch of food stolen from them!   :grrr:

At Royal Kunia, the 10th hole is where golfers have food since they usually buy something to eat after the turn.  I've have them take an entire sandwich, which was still inside the plastic container, and drag it from the cart back into the bushes.  My friends were laughing at me because I got my sandwich stolen and we could hear them pretty much attacking the plastic container, trying to get at the sandwich.  I laugh about it now. . .  ;D

I guess they key would be finding what they are interested in and them learning that it's available.

Anyone know of a way to lure / bait mongeese?
I have several around my yard and it appears that they recently had a few pups.

mongeese have been hitting my rat bait stations
how do i know?
they thrash the station and spread the bait all over the place
and they do it during the day, and rats are nocturnal

Cooked chicken for bait I guess. ....... From Malama Market.

Aloha Ren,

If you can get a havahart type trap like the one posted in this thread thats probably the easiest way for your situation.  There are many ways and types of bait you could use probably the simplest might be catfood if you or someone you know has got a cat. Sardines in oil is a great bait but some people dont wanna waste it on a mongoose LOL.  Or you can do what we do and use the oil and pour it on the catfood to enhance the scent etc.  I trap mongoose for a living so if theres any questions feel free to ask

Aloha

Yes, I have trapped one mongoose in an animal trap I bought. The trap is slightly bigger than the ones loaned by Human Society. It was vicious. Red eyes had laser beams trying to burn me. That was years ago at my parents' home in Aiea. I used raw fish. My parents told me to let it go and I never saw it again no matter what kind of bait I put out. I was hoping that there was a "fool proof" mongoose tempting, cant-resist type of bait that worked. - like lasagna to Garfield. I'll try the above bait you guys mentioned.

we used to use un cooked hot dogs as bait for ours.  We would catch both cats and mongoose.  They get vicious when trapped.

Howzit Ren,

The sardines is gonna be your best bet if you're lookin for a fool proof and simple without getting to technical.  Just puncture the top several times and make a few holes. We have done bait trials that go up into the thousands of hours over the years. When you do it professionally as we do there's a lot of research done. For your situation, it should be a pretty quick fix and if you have a larger havahart type trap. Its possible to catch multiple animals at once especially if there's pups.

Goodluck!

No kidding.  We caught a big male in one of those traps, mean little bastard.  He really wanted a piece of me.  Stunk up the place bad.

I have tried shooting them in our yard with an air rifle, but I would have to be set perfectly for the shot ahead of time.  The do not stay still at all, no time to aim, which you got to do with a small head and a pellet gun.

Before I got my egg laying Rhode islands as chicks, I "cleared the perimeter" for several months prior.

The Havahart  baited with chicken bones always worked.
I had to rig a wire from the trigger over the top and bait it cuz the little ones were too light to activate the floor plate trigger.
Caught plenty that way and with the airguns we cleared them all out.
Still have traps out cuz, well  they do come back.  :grrr:

As for a hunting licence, I once had an issue with a lady feeding feral chickens.
When they (chickens) trespassed on to my property, I head shot them with an air gun.
She complained and called HPD.

When I was"interviewed, it was simple.
HPD: :You are discharging an air gun.
Me : Pellet never left my property.  ::)

HPD :  Do you have a hunting license ?
Me  :  Chickens are not on the game list (like pheasant or quail) so it wasn't hunting, but rather what I called "pest remediation".  >:D

HPD :  Animal cruelty ?
Me :  No, I was feeding the chickens to my dogs.

HPD was very understanding.  :shaka:
I complained and had the lady fined for feeding feral chickens.

Had that problem with no triggering as well.  Can you take a pic or diagram how you rigged it to trigger easier?
