I am a .22 fan. I shoot a lot of .22 ammo. Both rifle and pistol. I shoot mostly Standard Velocity (SV) and Target/Match ammo. I shoot the cheap (If you can call it that nowadays) High Velocity ammo for plinking over on the silhouette range.

Some fanatics on another forum are claiming that they weigh their target/match cartridges and separate them out and match up all that are the same weight or within 0.1gr of each other. They claim that the constants are the bullet weight and case/primer weight and that the variable is in the powder. And they know this because they take apart so many of the target/match cartridges per lot of ammo that they buy. Since changes in velocity causes point of aim to differ between rounds, they are trying to match consistent weight cartridges as having consistent powder weights for group consistency. Some claim this is true but have no empirical data to share while others are saying that the bullet weight and case weight cannot be that constant so it is a fallacy.

I am too pake to take apart a bunch of my expensive target/match ammo to see if the bullet and case weights are that constant.

I have never tried weighing the cartridges but I am tempted to just for the fun of it. I have enough of one lot of match ammo and probably enough of one lot of SV ammo to attempt to prove or disprove this theory.

Anyone try this before? Or want to try this? Does anyone have any data they can share? Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yes, some of the discussion revolved around rim thickness. The thing is though, at least in the discussions I have seen, rim thickness was sort of a non issue with the more expensive ammo as there was not enough of a variance to make any difference.

interesting..........................i don't weight my 22 match ammo (lapua, eley, rws)................... may improve some but that's why top tier match ammo cost what it cost.

it may work shooting at closer ranges but at kokohead with the wind conditions look for ammo that holds better and drifts less in the wind.

I've done weight and rim thickness sorting.  Rim thickness seemed to net the greater benefit. (less vertical spread at 50 and 100)  This benefit was very small in comparison to other factors, such as shooter error and wind.  Unless one wanted to shoot a small group benchrest match, not sure it's worth the time.

Maybe it's an all in the head thing, where you KNOW everything is as consistent as you can control, it'll give you that little bit more confidence?

I sort by rim thickness because my 22s aren't the most accurate (M&P22 AR and Sig 1911-22) and it seems to make a difference. BUT this past Sunday, I met Eric and he let me shoot his Pardini SP22 Pistol. Using standard velocity CCI,  standing, I shot 5 shots in the 10 ring with 2 Xs. No BS.
That gun is super accurate with regular ammo. I'm not going to sort my 22s anymore, just buy a Pardini.....
Oh dammit! I just checked online and that was a $2700.00 gun. Oh well, Where 's my rim thickness measuring thingy.....

I don't but have heard many on the mainland that weight sort and rim thickness sort even on Eley Tenex.

Let's get this 22 precision thing going. I'm sure it'll catch on. At the very least it'll introduce some of us not in the "regulars" at KHSC to each other. I see so many pimped out 22s when I shoot.
