Precision AK? (Travis Haley with Jim Fuller)
« on: May 12, 2016, 12:36:29 PM »
They didn't go into what improvements/features went into the main AK in this video, but it looks like it would be quite pricey.  Probably way out of the range of what I would be willing to spend though.  I've heard/read a bunch of discussions regarding accuracy potential and/or problems with the AK.  I've always thought that it was definitely accurate enough in the context of use in defending yourself and family.  With the ammo I buy, I don't expect to be shooting quarter sized groups either.   ;D

That said, I would love to have regular access to ranges like the ones in the video.  Best available locally (for me) is KR3 at Schofield, but that's rare.  I've been out to the Puuloa range (for work, not related to shooting) and walked out to the 1,000 yard position and that looks like fun if I could take my Rem 700 out there!

I'm very much an AR person, but I've always been interested in the AK.  I don't get to shoot my AK near as much as I want to.  The same could be said for my ARs for that matter though.  :(

Not particularly interested in a precision AK. More posted because it was interesting discussion and what they did. People put hundreds of dollars into all sorts of guns. Overheard guys talking about spending $800+ on their Glock. Not quite for me, mostly because I have other things I want to buy/do, but still interesting what people choose to do with their guns.

All of my ARs are pretty basic as well and don't see myself putting much more money into any of those for precision, but the Rem 700 is waiting for stuff like stock and other work.

It's no big secret that I am a huge fan of the AR/M4/M16 platform and probably have more than my fair share of these rifles from stock to very high end, including precision types.  But I am also an AK guy and am guilty of spending money there also, in fact I am doing one now.  I am not however nearly as bad as those full blown AK wacko's.  ;)

I hardly shoot the AK mainly because I'm lazy in added cleaning after shooting Russian ammo even if the box says non-corrosive.   I used WIN white box to sight in with a Pro Patrol sight.

I do prefer the M4 pattern over the AK, but it takes me pretty much the same amount of time and effort to do an equivalent field strip, cleaning, lubrication and re-assembly of either weapon.

Surf, if you shoot Russia ammo like Wolf, Tula or the bears, what do you use to clean your barrel and other internal parts?
Because I got the Arsenal black finish, I don't use Hoppes 9 or similar, just CLP.  Others recommend Ballistol.

Aloha,

I shoot all of those ammo types.  I use Mirachem gun cleaner / degreaser.  It is biodegradable, non flammable, non toxic, non caustic, non corrosive and safe to all finishes that I have ever seen including paint.  It is my go to cleaner for everything.

I use Simple Green to clean my black powder guns. Nothing is more nasty and corrosive than black powder. Afterwards I dry the parts and apply liberal amounts of CLP or Ballistol.

I started to gather stuff for an AR that was more precision oriented, meaning something more than just a red dot.  BHW barrel, Noveske lower (not that a particular lower mattered, just what I had selected for this build), etc.  I even had a USO 1-8x lined up, but then the gun craze hit around 2012-2013ish and never got back to it.   :(

For my AK, I'm just toying with just a red dot.  First try will be via the Arsenal scope mount.  I tired my old EoTech, but that was way too high.  Will try a lower profile red dot like a Bushnell, Primary Arms, TruGlo copies of the T-1.  If that doesn't pan out, then I'll likely go with the mount that replaces the handguard, like the Midwest Industries AK handguard.

Added cleaning?  Have you had a bad experience from shooting stuff like Tula, Wolf, Silver Bear, etc?  That's all I shoot with my AK and many times the cleaning is a few passes with a boresnake.

The RD702 seems like something I'd try.  But at $2200. . .  :(

Yeah, I am sure they do high quality work.  Just can't justify spending that kind of money on an AK.  At least right now.

I like Noveske lowers and do the majority of my work off of them.

As for the AK if you want low profile, I would stick more with the Ulitmak or similar product that replaces the gas tube.  I do run the RS Regulate on more than one rifle, but the railed gas tube set up is the best for keeping a lower profile.

I am currently awaiting this rail exact rail and picatinny gas tube to arrive from SLR Rifleworks.  Which come to look at it, is exactly what is in the video above.  I have a couple of their AR rails and like the work.  The railed dust cover is from Texasweaponsystems.com.  Not convinced on the dust cover as I really wouldn't want to mount an optic on it anyway, so I am lost on its utility and I already run the RS Regulate.  Pretty much the RS Regulate mounts NV optic, so it is easy on / off and the front rail runs the red dot, which stays mounted.  Red dot to NV optic with a simple throw of a lever.

I went with the Arsenal SM-13 first because all it required was a simple mount to the receiver.  Didn't realize that it would put the optic so high.  I guess I could swap out the stock for something more AR/M4 like, but not that many stocks for milled receivers.  I found couple CAA ones that looked promising, but sort of wanted to keep the original stock, at least for now.

The gasblock/handguard mount was always an interesting option and now that I don't think the scope mount method will work for me, that's probably where I'll end up.  I've heard of the Ultimak rails as well and I think one friend has it on his AK, but I don't shoot with him that often.

Now that SLR Rifleworks setup looks AWESOME!  My next AR upper will have the BCM Keymod rail, so that setup would be great!  I really like that it doesn't require any MODs to the base gun.  The AK 11.5" MID Keymod - A looks promising, though pricey when you add the full length gas tube.  Another thing to add to the "to buy" list.

I've looked at the Texas Weapon System dust cover rail and I liked the concept at first, but I always wondered how much that cover moves.  Seems like in a couple online video reviews that it wasn't a problem.  I'm not really into making my AK into a precision gun (despite the thread title), but I'd still like to have confidence that the optic isn't going to be moving around.
