Now that SLR Rifleworks setup looks AWESOME!  My next AR upper will have the BCM Keymod rail, so that setup would be great!  I really like that it doesn't require any MODs to the base gun.  The AK 11.5" MID Keymod - A looks promising, though pricey when you add the full length gas tube.  Another thing to add to the "to buy" list.

I've looked at the Texas Weapon System dust cover rail and I liked the concept at first, but I always wondered how much that cover moves.  Seems like in a couple online video reviews that it wasn't a problem.  I'm not really into making my AK into a precision gun (despite the thread title), but I'd still like to have confidence that the optic isn't going to be moving around.
The SLR set up is not cheap, but when talking AR rails and stuff, not priced out of range.  I ordered AK 13.5" Mid Keymod-A - AK Mount: MOD 1 - Full Length Gas Tube: Full Length Gas Tube.. and it came out to $298 and change which includes the $13 flat rate shipping.

Yep, I didn't want to mount an optic to the TWS railed dust cover due to possible shift and I have the RS mount already which has been very good with repeatable zero.  Not sure if the RS mount would clear the dust cover either?  I have an NV scope mounted to the RS and it will sit just high enough to clear the red dot mounted on the railed gas tube.  So I don't need to remove or offset the red dot when I mount the NV optic.  So when not needed the bulk of the NV is unmounted and I still have a pretty light bush rifle for pigs, which is the set ups primary purpose.

Thanks Stang, Surf and Inspector on the cleaning tips.
Below is my SLR personal defense weapon.  Has a pro patrol red dot on a RS regulate AK-303 rail with AKM ring.
Probably takes me longer to take the pic and post it than to clean the rifle.
The pic might be upside down, can't figure out how to save the rotated view.

Yep, came out upside down, sorry gang.  Told you it takes longer to figure this photo posting especially using Hickok 45's way to clean the AK

Yeah, the SLR rail isn't expensive overall when compared to AR rails and even cost of shooting stuff in general, especially when you factor in optics.  I generally think of AK as overall inexpensive, or maybe less expensive.  Cheaper in terms of cost of gun when compared to ARs (of course depending on which manufacturer and what you do with it) and ammo.  Though AK ammo isn't as cheap anymore.   :(  I don't shoot the AK that often, so it doesn't get the same attention as my ARs do.  But those SLR handguards and optic rail are definitely on my list to buy!

A buddy in Texas (near Houston) hunts pigs with NV and suppressors.  Sounds like fun where they ATV out there and hunt.  I've also heard the pigs/hogs are damn smart.  He told me this story of where a pack of around 60 of them seemed to be surrounding he and his buddy.  They both had ARs, but not that much ammo.  :o

Interesting that the pic shows up just fine (optic side up) on Tapatalk.

With that stock, are you able to get a good cheekweld with that optic height?

When I put my old EoTech 512 on the Arsenal scope mount, it was more like a chin weld to see the dot since the optic was so high!

Glad the photo came out ok.   When I e-mailed it to myself for some reason it was upside down and I couldn't right side I up.
The folding stock is factory and although I shot this years ago, I didn't remember any issues with the height affecting my cheek weld on stock.
I will take a measurement from a fixed location on the receiver to centerline of the sight and let you know so it might help to compare with your 512.   I got the RS AK-303 which is the full length rail to get more options.  The Pro Patrol might not be the best red dot style for an AK but I wanted to try.

No worries about taking measurements.  I no longer have the 512 and I'm likely going to eventually go to mounting a red dot on a rail section over the gas block.  Thanks tho!

I have an Aimpoint PRO on a beater AR.  It's a good optic, but I agree that maybe not the best for AK, especially if one is looking for something more low profile.  I would love to get an Aimpoint Micro to mount on the AK, but they are just too darn pricey.  I have a couple of micros on ARs, so I might just try one of those, at least to try.  I also wouldn't mind trying a RMR type dot on an AK as well.

Pigs are extremely smart, especially when it comes to trapping them and it is somewhat like a chess match.  Feeders or dogs make it easier.  Hunting in hours of darkness is not legal unless if you hold a special permit.  While you will not hear guys shooting, you will hear A LOT of dog hunting going on after the hours of darkness especially in out of the way places.  Even on private lands and that is what pisses me off.

Have you considered a Vortex Razor red dot?   They come in 6 moa dot for close work too and cost less than Trijicons etc..  I don't have one but have 2 different Vortex sights which to me sighted in quicker than my Aimpoint Pro and T-1.  Downsides is battery life less than Aimpoint.
Aimpoint is the best but I also like Vortex products.  Good luck with your AK.

Yeah, I did consider the Vortex Razor.  At around $400, I'd probably spring a little more for a micro.  The Venom is on that I am seriously considering too. The Bushnell TRS-25 is another I am looking at.

I am a fan of Vortex though. I have a Viper PST FFP on my Rem 700 and love it!  I think they are excellent value for the money!

I have the Venom on my 1894 lever rifle in .357 mag.   Like this little sight, easy to sight in mounted on a receiver rail.  But with the small size adjustment controls are small.   With Memorial day coming up you might find at a good price.
Venom use CR-1632 batts which are hard to find but bought extra at Battery Bill's for a good price.
