CCW CLASS IN NEVADA
« on: May 13, 2016, 09:56:58 AM »
Aloha 2aHawaii community, I wanted to share my recent experience with you all.  Hopefully it’s helpful information to someone that’s interested in getting a CCW on the mainland.  Please post any questions you have and I’ll try to answer the best I can.

Sunday March 13, 2016      Attended CCW Class at Range702 in Las Vegas
Nevada, Utah, & Florida CCW Class $103.86

Class was from 1000 – 1800,  8 hours and 20 students attending.
Overall, the class was as expected, covering everything from basic firearm safety, methods and equipment for concealed carry, the lega use of deadly force, and the aftermath of shooting someone.

Laws for the 3 States were covered, and a brief session on CCW reciprocity. We then filled out all CCW applications in class.

After the class, we all shot the Nevada Qualification:

Humanoid target , B27
3 yards      6 rounds   standing,  no time limit
5 yards      12 rounds
7 yards      12 rounds
Total       30 rounds

Maximum Score possible is 300 points, with a minimum passing score of 210 points (70%).

You can use any caliber Pistol or Revolver.  They rent firearms as well but I decided to bring my own. I shot my Sig P226 and scored 285.
I thought that sucked at such a close range but I outscored everyone else in our class. I guess having to shoot only 25 yards at Kokohead helped. There were several people who looked like it was only their second or third time shooting and they didn't
qualify but they're allowed to try 2 more times within a 24 hour period.

The instructor and class were good, and their facility is the best indoor range I’ve been too.  They cater to a lot of tourists and were really busy but they have a separate “VIP” lounge with four lanes where we shot our qualifier. I could hear the sound of full auto fire the entire time I was there.

If you decide to go, it’s a solid 8 hours of class so get plenty of rest.
They have a snack bar but only sell chips and soda so pack some refreshments and lunch if you can.  The closest place to get food is about a 5 minute drive and lunch break was only 30 minutes so a lot of people ended up eating in class.

Monday March 14, 2016   Submitted Nevada CCW application in person at Clark County Metro Police Station.
            CCW Fee      $60.00
            Back Ground Check   $38.25
            Fingerprint Card   $14.00
            Additional Card      $2.00
            Total Cost       $114.25
The Las Vegas Metro Police Department opens at 8:00am but I was there a little after 6:00 and was 3rd in line.  By 7:30, there was a line behind me of at least 40 people.
Aside from CCW processing, it’s also their records division and something else (I forget) so not everyone in line was there for a CCW permit.

I thought their system was very efficient.  When you first walk in the door, you’re directed to a service window to the right.
You tell them what you’re there for and you’re given a number. You then go in to the main waiting area and there are about 10 or 15 service windows. You just watch the monitor and wait for your number to come up, and it
tells you which window to go too.  The whole process only took about    30 minutes, and everyone there was super friendly and courteous.

Thursday March 17, 2016   Mailed Utah Application   $51.00
                            Mailed Florida Application   $112.00

Applications that are mailed in must be notarized, and include a passport photo, fingerprint card, and check for the fees.

Wednesday March 30, 2016   Check sent for Utah application clears.

Thursday March 31, 2016   Check sent for Florida Application clears.

Each State’s Statute outlines the time frame in which a permit must be issued or denied.
            Nevada = 120 days
            Florida = 90 days
            Utah = 60 days

Friday, May 13, 2016      Still waiting!   I should be getting my Utah permit by the end of the month.

......too be continued

Make sure I have this correct. You took a ccw course in Nevada and will use that certificate to acquire a Florida ccw?

NV requires that you submit your application in the county the class was taken in.  I heard Clark County processing is slow.  I took my class at Front Sight and submitted my application in Nye County Sheriff Office in Pahrump.  I got my permit in the mail 17 days later.  I mailed in my Utah and AZ permits and got both inside of 30 days.  No lines at the Sheriff's Office either, processing including fingerprinting only took 15 minutes.

Scorpio ps, yes you can use the training done in NV for FL, as long as it was taught by a FL certified trainer.  You can get a UT non resident permit in HI.  There are several UT certified trainers here.  NV on the other hand, requires that you get the training in the state of NV, so I had to go there.  NV is about the only state I visit now.

As far as I know Nevada does not accept a Florida ccw  and vise versa. Not questioning but why would Florida give me a ccw just cause I took the course in Nevada.

Scorpio ps,
When you take the CCW class in Nevada, as long as the instructor is recognized by the state of Florida as a firearms instructor, he can put his instructors stamp and signature on your Florida application. You still have to apply for the Florida non-resident permit.

FL doesn't say the trainers or courses must be certified by the state.  They only require you to show handgun proficiency.  "instructor's qualifications/credentials - National Rifle Association instructor, law enforcement firearms instructor, Class "K" Firearm Instructor licensed by the State of Florida, etc."

I found the FL website where they list everything you need to do for CCW, including training --- http://www.freshfromflorida.com/Divisions-Offices/Licensing/Concealed-Weapon-License/Acceptable-Training-Documentation

Arizona also has minimal CCW requirements, and you can use it in Nevada.

My nevada ccw took exactly 112 days to a arrive at my door. My Florida ccw says 55 days but it was closer to 90.  These 2 states cover the states I visit with reciprocity. RSN172 .... 17 days??? NICE!! I guess the long haul drive was worth it in trade if you were in a hurry to get your ccw.

Yes, I was surprised, especially when the clerk at the Sheriff's Office told me I should get it in 60 days if approved.  On another note, my wife and I applied for TSA Precheck to get our KTN or Known Traveler Nbr.  I got mine in 2 days.  Hers is still being processed a week later.

Update...
I received my Utah Concealed Firearm Permit in the mail on 5/14.  It was issued on 5/10 and mailed on 5/11.
The enclosed letter says "You have been issued a concealed firearm permit by the Utah Department of Public Safety, this permit is valid contingent on a satisfactory criminal history report being received from the FBI. You will be notified if the fingerprints are rejected, or of a revocation if the FBI criminal history report contains information of a disqualifying nature. "

here's the latest update,

My Florida CCW was issued today (checked online) and it says to allow 7-10 days for it to be printed and mailed.  Today makes 80 days since I mailed it in.
Still waiting for my Nevada CCW, they have up to 120 days to issue so I probably have another month to wait.

When I applied in person at the Las Vegas Metro PD. They'll do extra fingerprint cards for $2.00 each.
I made 2 extra, 1 for my Utah application and one for Florida.
