Drought? Yea or Nea? What say you?
« on: June 17, 2016, 07:29:00 PM »
For the last couple of elections I have started a thread right around the time that the big run on firearms and ammo started. I warned everyone that if they don't have at least 2+ years worth of ammo and/or supplies or if you are getting ready to buy a black gun or popular handgun you should consider doing it ASAP. But this time it is a little early to know whether we are going into a drought condition or not.

I believe we are going to have another run on firearms and ammunition. I believe it will start around election time if it has not already started due to the Orlando in incident. For those of you who didn't experience this for the last 8 years we had long stretches of time between ammo shipments and people ran out. People were hoarding and buying large quantities when anything became available. This prevented those that didn't react to a shipment within minutes were left out in the cold. Prices rose to gouging levels. Some websites were taking back orders on stuff that they couldn't fulfill for a couple of years. Even the CMP halted pre-selling some ammo because they couldn't get enough to fulfill their orders. And they still cannot. It has been several years now. And it was not just ammunition and firearms. Bullets, powder and primers were also non existent. Powder and primers just started coming back a while ago. But .22 ammunition is still tough to come by. Especially the good stuff.

So what do you say? Drought coming? Or do you think I am full of it?

I am still trying to get a certain powder that I want, and still have been unable to have it brought in.  The .308 cal projectiles have just recently been replenished, however, I think there will be another run.  The heightened attacks on our 2nd amendment has already started,  I don't want to be an alarmist, but I think this will be a bad one in the next coming months.  I certainly hope LGS and other gun business begin to step up their game in defending 2A here at home and nationally, they stand to lose more in the long run if they impose tighter nonsensical restrictions, and with the increased demand, higher costs will mean less sales, IMO.

Being that gun people like to be prepared, I think it would be prudent to stock up a little.

I am looking for 5.56/223, 7.62x39 right now not because of recent events but because I have Rifles that use them and I don't  have any.   If I see any sales I will pick some up but am a little concerned events will effect availability.

I hope not, but believe it has already started to a certain extent. Starting with limited availability of specific guns and then ammo. Just when things were getting back to good in terms of ammo and even many guns priced helped where they were in 2012 before the mad rush.

i bought my first pistol right after the golden child won the first time
was worried that we might not ever have a chance to obtain firearms ever again
supplies started drying up and prices rose for a couple of years after that, then things became available again
then came sandy hook, and we faced a year of shortages
now we are facing an even larger threat with an election coming up
i am fortunate to no longer own any firearms, ammo, or reloading equipment/supplies
so even if "they" start to seize weapons and associated things, i have none for "them" to take

I'm trying to get powder for 55 gr. 223 and another brick primers.   If XM193 or XM855 type ammo goes on sale I would buy, but reloading components go a long way in cutting costs.
Read that during the 2012 scare, stuff like shotgun ammo remained plentiful and at stable costs.   Hope for the best.... again.

I think last time the big runs started on ammo and certain black guns, Then powder and primers. After a while brass and bullets became almost impossible to get. Mail order or local. I started the powder trade thread (which is now a stickie) because when you can't get powder you run low on one type and have extra of others. I was able to maintain my stores due to the great people on this forum wanting to do trades. We all benefit from this.

I will be interested to see if the run on all these items continues if Trump gets elected. And if so will the run be shortened?

I will also be interested to see how long the drought will last if Billary gets elected. It may even continue throughout her 4 year term.

Yes, I think there will be a run, but I don't think that it will be as bad as 2008 or 2012.

The reason being that in 2008 people, and manufacturers, were caught flat footed. There had never really been a POTUS with such anti gun tendencies and manufacturing capability didn't exist to keep up with the massively increased demand. Since then manufacturers have ramped up and have the ability to run shifts 24/7 if needed. 2012 was uncomfortable simply because they still hadn't completely caught up with demand from the previous run.

We'll certainly see price spikes and inventory shortages, but I doubt they'll be as long or as severe as 2008. New ammo companies and the explosion of AR builders and manufacturers should be better able to keep up with demand.

Always be yourself.

It wouldn't surprise me if all the Dems had stock in the gun manufacturers and ammunition manufacturers. I'll bet the Clitoris Foundation has investments in these companies.

The rush to buy is already underway:

Agree with Inspector, the  OP. A lot of us who endured the 2008-9 and 2012-13 droughts learned to stock up in fat times.

It will get worse if Congress enacts more restrictions, Clinton wins, or another mass shooting occurs. If all three happen, things could be as bad as last time. I hope HPD will be up to the increased traffic.

If you reload for .223/5.56 it's not too late - here's a great deal: http://www.nereloading.com/index.php/hornady-bulk-bullets/hornady-55-grain-fmj-223-projectiles.html

Sounds good to me, USA made bullets at a good deal.  Thanks, can always use some more.
Right now  only concentrate on 55 gr. FMJ and 77 gr. SMK in .223 mainly cause can't find USA made green tip bullets or similar.

You can't find TMK's? I just was on Powder Valley's site and they had a whole bunch.

Not looking for TMK style bullets but want to copy M855 bullets with the steel core in 62 gr. and want to get bulk sizes like 1K.
Maybe nobody sells them separately, don't know.
BTW that link from Lihikai for the 55 gr. Hornady FMJBT is $77 shipped to my zipcode.   Might be too good to pass up for range ammo

I've bought heads from these guys before, but have not tried the SS109 heads.  Free shipping.

Mahalos, that's what I was looking for.   They don't list the mfg. but it has good reviews.
