Shipping Ammo to Hawaii - Lessons Learned

Aloha,
New to the board and decided to register and share with you all what I have learned in trying to ship ammo to Hawaii (I'm on Kaua'i).  I purchased a Savage .204 and knew beforehand that the .204 Ruger was not a popular, or readily available, cartridge out here.  I spent hours doing research and calling gun shops, freight forwarders etc. and want to help out those who can benefit from my work.  Hopefully this will save you some time and throw some business to the people who helped me along the way.  I will break down what I have learned according to lead time and pricing:

1. Long Lead Time:  JGB Arms LIhue, Kauai
20x10 (200) .204 Ruger Hornady VMAX 40gr
Price Quoted: $285.00
Lead Time:  They were kind enough to put me on their next shop order with estimated delivery 3-7 weeks.

2. Medium Lead Time: OGC Tactical Honolulu, Oahu
20x10 (200) .204 Ruger Hornady VMAX 40gr
Price Quoted: $262.00 and they would drop to Young Bros. for barge shipping over to Kaua'i which I would be responsible for upon receipt.  Spoke to Young Bros. and the Hazmat/Shipping cost minimum was roughly $70.  ( I will include details on what you need for this below)
Lead Time:  Carter and Eric were super helpful and responsive to my request and were willing to put my order on the next shop order with a lead time to Oahu of 12 days with an additional 3-5 days barge time over to Kaua'i.   I ended up going with another vendor due to time restraints but if you are on Oahu, I would highly encourage you to do business with OGC as they are straightforward and dedicated to helping their customers; great guys and they work their asses off.

3. Best Lead Time: Powder Valley Inc. Winfield, KS
20x10 (200) .204 Ruger Hornady VMAX 40gr
Price Quoted: $178.00 with 2nd day air UPS cost of shipping at $125.00 for a total of $303.00.  I went with Powder Valley Inc. for the best lead time with not too much additional cost.  I recommend calling them (be mindful they are CST) and speaking with a rep to get the best deal.

So hopefully this will help some of you out.  I read through alot of threads on here trying to find someone to ship ammo to me.  If you decide to go the route of using a freight forwarder.  See my attached CFR screenshots for more information.  A link to CFR 172.101 can be found here:

Example Hazmat form for Young Bros. can be found here:

Save this somewhere and keep it handy for when you have to fill out your manifest and Hazmat paperwork.  This will save you a shitload of time and research if you have not done it before.  Aloha ke akua!   :shaka:

Great info!

I've looked into this very topic quite often.  More when I was looking for a specific ammo type than a caliber that is not readily available.  Balancing shipping and hazmat costs and such.  I even looked into freight forwarding, with and without assistance with buddies from port cities like Seattle and Long Beach.  Never ended up putting together an order, but good information anyways.
