ASSAULT
Retired Honolulu police Sgt. Anson Kimura has been charged with assault in connection with a shooting at a King Street bar that injured a bartender last year.

On Friday, city prosecutors charged Kimura, 57, with second-degree assault, a charge of recklessly causing serious bodily injury to the bartender April 3, 2015. Kimura turned himself in to state sheriff deputies Tuesday and was released after posting $5,000 bail.

I think we all know how this is going to fall out. He'll plead guilty at the arraignment, a slap on the wrist with minimal probation time, everything else ends up under the rug.

Anyone else wonder why it takes so long to file charges?  Not like the identity of the perp was unknown!

No intent. Second degree assault is a class C felony though. I suppose he might plead "not guilty", then take a lesser plea to third degree assault which is a misdemeanor.

Takes time for the lawyers to figure out how to make it look like the state did its job while letting him off easy. You or I would be rotting in jail unable to post 1 million in bail, assuming bail was even granted.

Assault in the 2nd degree contains the state of mine "recklessly." That is much easier to prove than knowingly or intentionally.

And realistically, it is more appropriate. There is no reason to believe he intended to shoot the bar girl. If she died it would have been manslaughter.

I don't know why it took so long though. If she had initially declined to press charges then that could be a reason for the delay.

Media is not reporting witness statements or following up with any details besides the press release bits. The cover up continues
Stop blaming lazy people. We didn’t do anything.

How about taking some statements from witnesses? It's a local story and a 5 minute drive from every local media outlet.

Maybe lazy reporting but doubt a coverup. It is an old story, the only thing new is that the cop is getting charged. I guess they could have linked old stories.

Of course its a cover up, He pulled a gun in a bar (for no reason) Shot some one (by accident). Then instead of getting Fired, He gets put on administrative leave then retires a month latter keeping is pension intact.

The pension is money he already earned. I don't think that being fired or convicted of a crime means your pension disappears.

Anytime a cop shoots his gun he/she is going to be put on leave or desk duty pending the result of the investigation. Because of the contract they cannot just outright fire him.

Dumb question but does this mean he can't own guns anymore?

If he gets convicted, yes
