When I've had people try my ARs, most first time shooters will ask about if the recoil will hurt them.  I have to blame movies and TV for portraying so much misinformation and exaggeration of firearms in general.  From like how a shotgun can either blow a man off their feet to blow the shooter back across the room.  To how easy it is to shoot a Desert Eagle 50 cal with one in each hand.  Ok, there may be some here that can do that. . . [sarcasm, kinda  ;D ]

They're the Honda Civics of guns.  Cheap to buy, cheap to run, efficient, powerful enough, not overpowering, easy to handle, modifiable. appealing enough looks, versatile, usable by a wide range of demographics, etc.

Tend to be quite accurate as well.  Alternatives such as the Mini-14 are notorious for inaccuracy.

Just watch an "A-Team" rerun, they never hit anything!

I like the AR platform, so i would rank them higher than a civic.  ;)
But I see your point

Well, it kinda depends on what guns, how much you shoot and what your wife/GF thinks is too much.   ;D

An M16 is so easy to shoot, I don't see how you could miss
@ 100 meters. I prefer SKS out to 300 meters.
M1A to 500 meters, and 7MM to 1500 meters.
I wish I could afford a 50 BMG for 2000+ meters.

Assault weapons are tools you use to prevent from being assaulted.
