Mayor Dejou?

Any chance he would appoint a pro 2A
Chief of police? Or doe's the comission make the choice regardless?

I don't know how it works, but I assume applicants apply to the mayor (usually high ranking HPD officers), mayor then nominates his choice, police commission votes on it.  The new Chief is autonomous, with very little input from the Mayor or commission.

Majority of HPD is anti-gun, and more so the higher up the ladder.  So for a pro-gun guy they'd have to either choose a lower ranking guy or go outside of HPD to another state which is unlikely.

Best we could do is have Djou give some pro-gun guidance to whoever he chooses.  But it's still up to the new Chief on how they run the show.  I believe Kealoha was supposed to be more gun friendly than past Chiefs when he took his position, but everything turned out to be the same.

Too bad the position can't be a civilian.

I wouldn't consider Djou someone that follows the Republican Party platform very closely - if he had to, I figure he'd pick someone he knew would pass muster with the Democrats.

I think we could expect him to be moderate but I doubt he would be very pro gun, at least not publicly. Though he doesn't choose the chief I think he does choose the police commission so he could put some pro gun guys on the commission and thereby influence the chief that way.

He isn't pro-gun publicly. I already tried to engage him multiple times, and he dodges the questions.

Never met the guy, but I know his brother and he's VERY pro gun. I'll ask him (the brother) next time I see him. I thought Charles was at least neutral to even pro-gun.

I sent an e-mail to his campaign and got ZERO reply, (after 2 weeks)

I can see the reasoning behind this.  It'd be a political death sentence if he was vocally progun in a vastly democrat state.  He has to appeal to both sides of the issue to have a slim chance to win, and this is the way to do it.

Only way I see to break out of this is to change the general public's attitudes of guns and I think that's where our failures are.

This.

It's political maneuvering.  He needs to pander to both sides, otherwise no chance.

That's why he is pushing the rail issue so hard right down the center. He's not going to tear it down, but refuses to spend more, is his position.

This could backfire in the long run though, IMO.

The HPD administration will follow the ebb and flow of the political hierarchy within the State and particularly the City and no Chief of Police will be confirmed that does not hold the same beliefs or that would be unwilling to adopt those same political ideologies.  It would be difficult for any Chief of Police to remain in Office, be re-confirmed, if they did not tow the line.  The job is a politically driven appointment.  In addition, any Chief of Police will promote or surround themselves with those who will support their agenda, be it political or policy wise.  This can lead to years of dealing with like minded ranking Officers that may take years to change the status quo until individuals retire and new regimes move in their own personnel.

Some Chiefs of Police are hands on when it comes to the direction and day to day operations of the agency leaving no doubt to all employees who is in charge.  Other Chiefs can take a very different approach and can be very hands off, leaving commanders at various levels to run their own operations as they see fit.  While micro-management is not ideal, leaving certain ranking individuals too much leeway can lead to a huge power struggle among the ranking and can breed a very unhealthy, cutthroat environment when it comes to getting promoted especially when the individual goal is promotion at any cost.  There needs to be a good balance or the agency will struggle.

We also need to understand that the 2A issue in Hawaii is a very low priority in the scope of the overall population of the citizens who live in this State.
