Electricity Bill ?

How much are you paying monthly for electricity, Im shock at the price Im paying in Hawaii...

It comes out to $0.33 for a kilowatt hour here (taxes included).

The norm I was paying was  7- 15 cents. With a total bill on average was $20 - $50 per month.

Whats your bill ?

$280-300 month............

This is what happens when the state is allowed to create a monopoly and allows groups to block any large scale attempt on renewable (not oil based) energy sources,  with Hawaii's trade winds and year round sun we should be a bunch more wind turbines but the fukin liberals dont like how they look and block progress for the sake of beauty.

Im holding on solar for now,

If you bough solar 5 years ago you paid twice what you would today, Im waiting for better battery's so i can go of grid,
Grid tie defeats the purpose of solar, Also for those that are grand fathered in at the buy back rates, Good luck keeping that as oil prices start to climb and maintenance costs go up

Besides the monopoly, were in a isolated place.  When the sun and wind is out, oil plants sit idle.   When it's cloudy and still the oil plants kick up, but solar and wind shuts down.  So we essentially pay for double the power generation equipment and backup generation.

They don't have this problem on the mainland where they can transport electricity around where it's needed.

Wife says $250+ before PV,  $21 now.

Did not run AC or anything either, that has to be a killer for those living in areas that have to have cooling.

Hawaii has the highest per kWh rate in the nation.  Oahu isn't quite as high as the outer islands, but our island is still WAY above the rest of the national rates.

Depending on the current price of oil, we pay anywhere from 80% to 100% or more above the next highest state (we pay about double the next highest state, give or take about 10-20%)

Normally wind and sun are not related per say.  This is why we need diversified energy.  We need sea, land and air.  Also a line to other islands to share. We could put a bunch of solar on kahoolawe which is a baron wasteland.  Put some floating wind/wave generators in between.  Along with island solar and wind we should never have to pay for oil from the middle east and to ship here which is an utter waste of money and not to mention the reproductions on the environment.
Or plan b we could stick a nuclear plant on one of the islands and get all our electricity that way.

Living on the Big Island 6 years ago = $200/mo

Living on Oahu for the last 6 years (Before the drop in price of oil) = $150/mo

Living on Oahu for the last 6 years (After the drop in price of oil) = $100/mo

Moving back to Big Island in >4 years. Will install full battery solar and go off grid.

You might be able to cut $50 off that monthly. Maybe there are some super inefficient appliances you have. Or if you use the oven every day that might be it.

Computers, you'd be surprised how much watts these things use.
A cheap "bronze" 500w power supply would suck 600w.
I use a 1000w silver

Here is my list of high draw equipment around the house  in order of wattage consumption:

Water Heater
Dryer
A/C
Fridge
washer
Microwave
Computers (desktop)
TV
Fans
pumps (aquariums)
Stereos (home theater amps)
......
lights use very little power.

upgrade your power supply to a Titanium
 rated PSU.

upgrade your power supply to a Titanium
 rated PSU.

I just picked up a Corsair HX1000i power supply, which is rated 80PLUS Platinum.  That is about 2-3% more energy waste than the Titanium as long as the power load is 10% or more below max load.

For the difference in price, it would be in most people's financial interest to go Platinum.  If you run well below the max load rating, it'll take much longer to realize any cost savings before it's time to get another supply.
