reloading supplies
« on: December 13, 2011, 09:21:47 AM »
Looking to pick up reloading supplies soon.  Still in the research and asking questions stage, but was wondering where everyone grabs their supplies from, (consumables).  I know dean at x-ring has some supplies, any other local shops sell supplies or anyone have extra stock they want to sell?  I also know there is that sticky up top with websites to order from.  Surely however some local gun store has to sell something.  Thanks for all the help guys

What I found is that I am basically stuck buying powder and primers locally since the mail order places add $20-$25/shipment for hazardous materials. And the local stores that sell powder/primers/quality bullets at or near retail also are out of most of what I want most of the time. When I find what I want at any of the local stores I buy as much as I can afford. Except for WGS. Their prices are somewhat higher but they almost always have what I want in stock. Hodgens Powders, Sierra Bullets, etc. So if you are willing to pay the extra price I found WGS has what I want most of the time. Hopefully someone else will let us know their experiences.

I have to 2nd WGS. It's a messy store with shit piled up everywhere - which tells you that a hobbyist that cares runs the store lol.

Young Guns would be my alternative. They have their own little wall of reloading supplies.

I like the guys over at Young Guns. They are fairly knowledgeable, and they are very helpful even when they are busy. The issue I have with them is that I use certain Hodgens and Winchester Powders and Sierra Bullets. And they are almost always out of the powder and bullets I use. They have told me that it is difficult for them to get the powders which is why they seem like they are always out. Yet, when I drive over to WGS he always has the Hodgens Powder I want. As far as the bullets go I have found it easier to buy as much as I can when I find it from Young Guns and others so I don't have to pay the price of WGS. I even considered stocking up on my next trip to CA and bring back as many Berger and Sierra bullets as I can. The price on the mainland is about the same as Young Guns. If Young Guns would only keep a better a stock of supplies I would buy more there.

As far as primers are concerned Young Guns had Federal Match Primers on sale at the last gun show and I bought a bunch from them. I am ready for more if they put them back on sale. hint

I meant to tell you that ordering sale items (like bullets/brass) from most of the online stores is not worth it unless you can get a deep discount and/or free shipping. Otherwise I found the price difference negligable when you factor in shipping. So consider staying local for consumables but keep an eye out for big sales/specials online.

So far I found some of the best consumables at the best prices at the gun show. Young Guns almost always has something on sale that I can use or try and there is another guy I get my tumbler media from. And there are a couple of people that sell used brass though I found if you can wait or advertise here you can find brass at good prices. And if you are into the not so standard calibers someone always has a small stash of off the wall bullets/cases/dies. Next gun show is in March if I remember correctly.

Locally I go to WGS and Joe/Henry.  Believe it or not but Security Equipment has some good prices from time to time, but you have to know what a good price is.

Primers...........when they have them in stock, it's Carter.  Starting the buildup on primers/brass/powder for the upcoming presidential elections.  Last election things didn't normalize for something like 2+ years.  I'm pretty much set on my brass, but I still need to bulk up on the powder & bullets.........probably some primers too.

Decided to check out x-ring today since its nearby.  Very informative.  Nice guys.  Prices seem ok.  If they are all generally in that neighborhood then its all good.  Decided to pick up a die set for 9mm.  Was only like $38.  Not bad.  Guess i just expected prices to be way higher.  Will continue to check out other shops and see what else is out there though.  Cant wait to actually get started.

X-Ring quoted me a decent price on small rifle primers today. If I have the time this Saturday I am going over there to pick some up.

I have to ask, why would they want their prices kept secret? I understand that some sell below MSRP and can't advertise their price but unless word gets out somehow no one will ever know.

I specifically asked for Federal Small Rifle MATCH primers and they quoted me $4.00/100 which is an excellent price for match primers. Which of course is $40.00/1k. I asked if they would give me a break if I bought 2k but they said no. Still, good price for MATCH primers.

Powder and Primers I buy from OGC when he has what I'm looking for on hand.  I've also bought from Security Equipment as well (powders and primers).  I will say that Young Guns has some good deals on their primers during the Guns Shows here.

As for anything else for reloading most of the tools I'll check with WGS before going online.  Yes their prices are a little higher but if it's on island I'm buying it rather than waiting for an order to come in through the mail.  Plus those guys (Joe and Henry) are always helpful after all they took the time to show me how to operate a Lee Turret Press walked me through the initial setup and dry-run.  They've even acknowledged a military veteran discount (when I showed my Service Connected Disabled Veteran ID).  The only drawback to WGS is their location for me since I live in Kapolei.
