"According to The Trace, the study asserts there are 265 million privately owned firearms in the U.S. The Guardian reported that 133 million of those guns were in the hands of those “super-owners,” a group of 7.7 million people."

"These individuals, termed “super-owners,” own on average 17 guns."

I don't know about you folks, but I don't do any type of survey that asks for personal information.

And a question like that would certainly get a hang up from me, so I don't know how much weight I would put in these types of numbers...  Just saying.

Hawaii's numbers would be accurate, I would think, since we are forced to register everything.

FUZZY MATH

Most gun owners would answer questions over the phone about how many guns they own.

The fact of the matter is their has been 243,558,967 NICS checks since 1998 with a 1.5% rejection rate (fbi stats) that means their has been 241875582 approved firearms background checks. This does not include private transactions and illegal transfers.

The study states that their is 265 million privately owned firearms in the USA.
So for that to be true their must of only have been 22 million guns in america pre 1998 and/or a lot of people dident buy guns after a background check or a lot of guns broke.

The math does not add up. Previous studys put the number of guns in america at 350-million http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2015/07/dean-weingarten/how-many-guns-are-there-in-america/

The AG's office in Hawaii puts gun ownership at 10% this is based of of registration information. This does not factor in pre-registration firearms and guns bought in from out of state. The real number is probably closer to 30% with most gun owners owning multiple firearms.

the only way to get these number is by using selective sampling and ignoring data that does not fit the pre determined decision (as they do with global warming)

Wow! only an avg of 17 firearms classifies someone as a "super owner" interesting.  I would have expected a higher number than that.

But seriously, on my phone I have a feature called the reject list.
I think that helps, but it does not solve the problem completely.

Interesting bit of trivia.... that the company that wrote that article is a southern based firm that has advocated active shooter training for all of their offices.

If someone owns 17 guns and is considered a "Super Owner". Then what constitutes a SUPER DUPER owner? Perhaps 25? 30? 50?  :)

We all know the point of the Articel and research is to give the american public the idea that owning guns is not normal but is something that is done by a small group of Americans living on the fringe

So your saying 9.7 million Americans are living on the fringe? Three percent (small group) or not, that is a damn lot of Americans living on the fringe.

Here is to us deplorables living on the fringe!!!  :tinfoil:

When you look at the aim of the research and the story yes, its meant to portray that 3% as crazy gun people.

According to the research the equivalent population of New York owns 1/2 the guns in the country.....

3% of the population doing anything is a fringe group.

The 3% club refers to all people, which in this study is the same as 14% of all gun owners. So it's not as selective a group as it looks and perhaps a mere 17 guns is therefore reasonable.
