Finding a victim of a hit and run
« on: September 20, 2016, 09:11:22 AM »
My wife witnessed a hit and run yesterday. She stayed and rendered aid. The victim wasn't able to speak, and the responders wouldn't share information. She gave her cell to both the EMTs and police with a request that they let her know what happened; so far, no call.

How would one go about finding out the victim's name and what hospital they were taken to?

Hi Tom.

   Good for your wife.

   Couple ideas are...
Victim would probably be taken to the nearest hospital.
HPD may want witnesses to the hit and run so ahe may want to follow up there.
Checking or posting on Craigs list (community general or local news).
News station may have info.
Posting a flyer at the scene of the accident as it is not unusual for relatives to go to scene. I do.

First responders are not going to share information with someone in that scenario. They might call her later as a witness but the victim's personal info is going to be kept secret, unless it were a relative or something.

Some people post own Facebook on the stolen stuff page saying that they were a witness and to contact them if the victim needs help but other than that she will probably not find out the outcome unless she ends up being called later by the police. Hopefully the police put it in the accident report so the victim can find it and contact your wife if she needs something on the civil side.

Basically what eyeeatingfish said.  It's still private information and maybe the victim doesn't want anyone to know.  A detective might contact you for more information depending on what happened and you could try and ask them how the victim is doing.

And good work to your wife for helping someone.  Many people would just pass by and do nothing.

Yeah, my expectation is that we've got no way to find him. Privacy concerns trump human compassion; that's the world in which we live. Apparently the poor kid was too messed up to even tell her his name while they were waiting for the ambulance.

It has made me think about putting a traffic cam in the truck, though.

I just got a cheap dashcam a couple of weeks ago.
It works so well I just ordered a second unit for my other car.

Costco has a brand for about $80. I paid $100 for mine. I have seen them real cheap for like $35 at one of the car parts store but I would hesitate on the quality there. Consider that they may pay for themselves 100 times over in the case of an accident. And a cop would greatly appreciate it if your video caught something else. Come to think of it I don't know why I haven't bought one for my wife yet

In my hometown the daily paper would publish a list of crimes committed the previous day, and I think they might have listed names and addresses of suspects/victims and where the crime occurred. I don't know if that was just something that my town did on its own or if there's a law that mandates reporting crime to the public. Maybe call the Honolulu star and see if they report this sort of thing?

It might be tough to find who you're looking for if you don't know any names or the case number. It gets more complicated If a minor is involved. If you have a name you can search criminal records at https://ecrim.ehawaii.gov/ahewa/, but it only shows convictions, not pending charges, and there is a service charge.

You can also try the traffic report at http://www4.honolulu.gov/hpdtraffic/ to see that it was reported and would have a case number. It looks like the site only lists reports for the last 24 hours, at least while looking on my phone, it might show more on a PC.

I hope that the kids ok.
