They don't need to be registered. Not sure about shipping. I think I recall seeing them in mail catalogs before though. That is an FFL question. I have a black powder kit derringer pistol I brought in and didn't register it. Midway has them on their website for sale.

 §134-3  Registration, mandatory, exceptions.
(d)  Registration shall not be required for:
     (1)  Any device that is designed to fire loose black powder or that is a firearm manufactured before 1899;

They ship to your door.

The reason they don't need to be registered (like, say, a single shot break-open .22LR rifle or pistol is required to be) is because criminals have yet to figure out how to use any black powder weapons, even those that look very similar to smokeless powder weapons, to commit any kind of crime. Can't be done. By virtue of the fact that, well, hell, I don't know. I admit that I have made an assumption, but otherwise you tell me why black powder weapons pose no "threat to public safety", while similar smokeless powder weapons do.

Does anyone really believe that a criminal having a mere six shots of black-powder-powered .44 could pull off a crime? Come on, get real! We  all know that criminals only use legally-purchased background-checked semi-auto handguns with legal 10 round mags. Otherwise, they'd be criminals!

Reason is, I was trying to get a 1851 from Midway, but they said our state law prohibits shipping to my address, Hawaii. I cannot find any law that states that, no FFL is needed per fed law for black powder,  I'm confused.

I saw one post in HHA from judge Choy that said buyers of black powder long guns and pistols need a rifle PTA with "for black powder" stamped on it.

Did not see that requirement in the statute either.   ??? ???

You still need a permit for black powder, some places don't want to deal with the possible legal issues

Agree with EEF, Suka and Punaperson.   No need.   Some places won't ship
to Hawaii.

If Pietta and 1860's model Navy is okay with you, have an unfired 1862
36 cal, "Police"  can offer for sale.   PM if interested?

Thanks for all you folks help.  Thanks OldMose.

Still haven't the specifics of the statute on black powder firearms though.  Seems the law ignores this aspect of firearms culture.  It's good for us, but could also be bad.

Yep,  I am about done with MidwayUSA.  I don't know what it is, they were such a good company to buy shooting stuff from years ago.  Now I have nothing but problems from them.  Seems like they are turning into another cheaper than dirt

Got my Pietta 1858 from Cabelas shipped straight to my door from Cabelas as well.

Also, Traditions will ship direct as well. Oh, don't forget to get your Dixie Gun Works catalog. They also ship direct to your house.

Midway sucks now. Bass Pro/Cabelas costs a little more but no probs shipping. Dixie Gun Works is the largest supplier of black powder supplies and guns. They have repros of all sorts of weird guns. Ships to Hawaii.

Let me know how you like the black powder.

I've bought a couple of things from Midway USA maybe 4-5 years ago, but I generally only browse there to research pricing.  Their shipping is awful and I never got particularly good service from them.  The last thing I bought was a brass catching net and went with them because they were the only one that had the item in stock.

I guess I never got that they were a particularly good vendor to buy from.  When I was a mod on a national gun board (no longer there), my working with them left a bad taste in my mouth.  They signed up as a sponsor.  We posted their logo, ads, etc.  Then they never followed through with any of their commitments.  A bunch of us had a falling out with the site owner, but we assume that the issues with Midway were due to difficulties working with the site owner.  However, maybe not.  Who knows.  All I know is that I generally don't buy from them.  CTD is another that I don't buy from anymore due to stuff like their price gouging practices and they are so large that many orders can get lost in the system.  Plenty of other online vendors that offer good prices and even better service.

Definitely Inspector. Thanks very much! Going shopping for black powder supplies is funny.  It's like I'm going to bake a cake or something.  Hahahah.

Exactly.  Before they were great at shipping and CS, but nowdays suck at both.  I really liked how they support the NRA and used their round up option to donate a lot for that cause. Not to mention the thousands I've sent with them on supplies.   Speaking with their CS, seems all that counts for squat to them, and they didn't seem to care one way or the other that they are losing a customer.

Yep, Cabelas, might not be the cheapest, but good all around.
