Not prying, more like hacksawing.

A Colorado couple charged with stealing evidence from a murder-suicide scene, including sawing the fingers off a corpse to steal a gun, says desperate people do desperate things.

"Wait until they're out there freezing half to death," Jerod Reeves, 29, tells KUSA in a jailhouse interview in Grand County, Colo. "Anyone that goes and finds a dead body in the wilderness and sees a freakin' wallet with some cash in it, they're going to take it. I don't care who you are."

Reeves, and Kimberly McCaffery, 35, of Craig, Colo., admitted to FBI investigators that they stole money, credits card, gasoline, an iPhone and the gun after coming upon a van with the bodies of William Ahrold and his son Jackson, 9, in Grand County on Dec. 17. Police believe Ahrold killed his son and then himself.

Reeves tells Denver's KUSA that they stumbled upon the van and had a hunch something was wrong, but didn't see Jackson's body until they were about to leave.

Instead of fleeing or calling police, the couple decided to steal whatever money was in the vehicle, KUSA says. Reeves also decided to cut Ahrold's frozen fingers off so he could get his gun.

"I sawed them off with a hack saw," Reeves says. "That was pretty crazy. I'm not really sure. I should have left that there."

The couple then fled to Washington state, where they were arrested.

Investigators say they initially tracked Reeves and McCaffery through the use of Ahrold's credit cards, KUSA reports. They also used surveillance photos taken of the two using the cards.

McCaffrey says the couple was homeless, had no money and was running on fumes.

"I did what I had to do that night to survive," Reeves tells KUSA.

The couple has been charged with tampering with physical evidence, criminal trespass and abuse of a corpse, and are being held on $150,000 bond in Grand County.

Talk about total lack of human decency.  They look like a couple of druggies.  Well at least now they won't be homeless and cold.  Instead they be clothed, sheltered, and fed all on the taxpayers dime.
