Anyone can shoot. $6 per round of 25 for non members, $5 for members. Open every Sunday and some Saturdays 9-4, last round starts at 3:30.

Largest shot size is 7.5. Trap usually uses 7.5-8, skeet #9, but the choice is yours. All shells are "target" 2.5". No magnum loads.

Choke is whatever you fancy but skeet, if memory serves me correctly, usually uses imp cyl. Trap, depending on handicap (distance)  is usually imp mod or mod for 16 yards, full for any other distance but the choice is yours.

Pump, semi, O/U, S/S, single barrels are fine. 12 ga is max.

Hope this answers all your questions. Come on down!

I've been thinking about getting either a Remington 870 or 1100 trap models but so far, I've never seen anyone at Kokohead using one.
All you trap shooters seem to be using the break action type shotguns.  Are the Remy's not a good choice?

Be wary of recent productions Remy shotguns. I've used a few and have friends that own them and they report a lot of problems. One friend is a duck hunter in Houston and he knows how to take care of his guns and still reports a bunch of problems with his gun as well as guns of his friends.

Relative to the Rem 870, When I own an older Rem 870 Magnum for skeet, it shot great with light loads, no jams.  I sold it and upgrade with a newer lighter synthetic Magnum model.  It jams a lot with light target loads. Don't get Magnum shotgun for skeet/trap.  I pick up a Benelli with stock fitted for me and never got a jam,.  My family member purchased a Rem 11-87 and only work with heavy load.  I felt bad, so I trade him my Benelli, and now the Benelli fit him like a glove. If you going to start out and think you going go play more skeet/trap get a Semi or under over and get the shotgun stock fitted for you.

0000 Steel wool chamber, ejector spring & non mim extractor fixes most 870 problems. I vote for a beretta 391 or a400.

Several years ago I used to go every weekend with a 870 and a classic Winchester model 12.  Generally shot in the 20-23 range.  Flirted with a perfect round twice lol.  The 870 will get the job done, but the people who shoot in the comps usually shoot o/u.  Not sure why, never asked, but they did help me a lot

i think comp shooters use o/u because the simple mechanism leads to ease of use and quick follow up shot, fewer moving parts leads to greater reliability.  I have a nostalgic sxs hammered coach gun that I would like to try shoot clay with but the o/u i think is superior to the sxs because the barrels are stacked on top of each other, both barrels will hit the target where it's pointed, in a sxs you may have to make adjustment for the  sxs barrels.  With that being said a sxs coach gun is definitely a self defense weapon, designed  to protect "coaches" back in the cowboy days and not intentionally designed for shooting birds out the sky but serviceable for hunting.
If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready.

Compared to my Benelli, the O/U shotguns are slimmer, longer, and weighted in such a way that they swing side to side really smoothly.  The weight also absorbs the recoil so follow up shots are really quick.  I don't know for sure, but I also suspect everyone feels more relaxed and comfortable hanging around a group of break-action shotguns that are clearly made safe.  Even tho my benelli action is locked open, I still make sure I don't muzzle sweep anyone just out of habit.

When I shot clays with both Benelli semi autos and some O/Us, the heft of the O/U seemed to help both with absorbing recoil as well as "swinging" factor. That and I just like O/U shotguns and have always wanted a nice Browning.

Sounds good, I'll try and round up some shotguns.  I have a mossberg 590 20" that I took up to Schofield Skeet range once and the folks there dubbed it the "man killer"

Hi zippz,
Any luck trying to get a shotgun meetup together? I acquired a 870 12ga 30" and I'm itching to get out and try some trap or skeet!

The trap club is trying to get the range open as much as possible. We share the area with HPD so we have to get the ok from them to open on days other than Sunday. So for we've been able to open on the fist Saturday of each month and are trying for more. We have a very lmted number of RO's as well which restricts use. Bottom line is if the range is open, HPD is not using the trap range area and there is an RO who is willing to open, then we're good to go. I'll be advertising here on 2A when I'm opening or another is opening outside of the normal schedule. As for 4/14, we will not be opening. Keep an eye out for posts from me though.... :shaka: :shaka:
