Lets play a game. Will you survive ?
« on: March 08, 2017, 02:04:13 PM »

Its 2pm on a Wednesday, You open your e-mail and see you have a message from a friend who works with NASA. You read the e-mail and its a warning. "In 24 hours a CME (solar flare) larger then any seen before will hit earth.

A natural disaster like the world has never seen is about to happen you have an advanced warning.
WHAT DO YOU DO ?  What are your immediate steps (not a 6 month plan but what do you do right now)

Keep your answer short and sweet and on topic. In 24 hours i will post the next part of the scenario. I want to turn this into a long running post where the scenario develops with the twist and turns of a what could happen to see how we react to the changing situations. some of it will go to pure fiction, some of it will go to realistic scenarios. I will add a new step into the scenario every day or two to keep it running. So remember dont get to in depth unless its needed as your plans could go out the window with the next step.

If you feel need need to quote PLEASE only quote the bold text (the question) so as posts dont go into whole pages.

Hmmm...
Call loved ones.
Fill water jugs.
Fill truck gas tank and spare gas tank.
Check to make sure propane cylinders are full. Top off if needed.
Visit Costco.
  • Canned foods
    hard liquor
    batteries.
If they have any of those survival food kits, buy a truckload. Literally.
a few of those solar-recharge Net Zero "generators".
    More propane cylinders
    portable lights
large garbage cans for additional water storage
    bleach
    several large first aid kits
Wash dishes
Do laundry

The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Fill all he water storage containers I have, over 100 gallons.
If the roads aren't too chaotic I would go to costco, otherwise the nearest super market and hardware store for supplies.
Supplies to include: Food, tarps, cooking supplies, plywood to board things up, rope, glue, general repair hardware, medical supplies.
Load all of my magazines
Fill up cars with gas and gas containers with extra.
Warn family members

Call friend to make sure it isn't a hoax or some BS
Call family and select friends
Leave work and pick up:
Fill up gas
Pick up canned food and other non-perishable items

Drop off my car and stuff I picked up at family member's house
Take family member's SUV and fill gas and gas cans and then head back to my place to pick up:
Canned and non-perishable food
Survival type gear, including first aid kits, clothes, select guns and ammo
Cooking supplies (propane tanks, charcoal, etc)  and but more on way back to family member's house

First thing would be to close bank accounts and draw all the cash.

next prepare all supplies, food, first aid, weapons as stated above.

Store as much fuel, water, and propane as possible.

Probably stage gear at other families homes and help them prep.

First action is notify: call my close network and assign them items to get; call head pastor to take care of church; tell close neighbors; post in 2AHI; call friend in VA to have her notify  familly

2nd go to Costco buy canned goods, flour, salt, batteries, vitamins and supplements, aluminum foil, 2 extra auto batteries, duct tape, nuts, electrolytes.  Go to City Mill after dropping Costco stuff off, get sheet metal and aluminum plates of any size, more water jugs/coolers, plastic sheeting rolls, spacer blankets if have.
At night go to Longs or Walgreens for OTC meds, electrolytes, supplements, butane containers, matches, lighters.  If time go to Safeway buy more canned goods, flour.  Fill truck with gas including my empty cans and get cash from ATM.    Lucky that Costco, City Mill, Longs/Walgreens, Safeway FHB, 76 station all close together and near my home.   Would max out whatever CC I have and save cash.

At home stay up all night to fill all containers with water; use aluminum/steel plates to cover my gensets, chainsaws, cover truck in garage with metal garage door with space blankets, foil; place SW radios, extra cell phone, laptop, 2 ways comms in metal tool box or cover with space blanket or foil.
Next day, if rest of my group arrives in the A.M., have them fill all their containers with water.  Might be hard to convince all to leave their homes to BO but hope they listen.
Not any kind of expert at protecting electronics from EMP damage so not sure about how I cover things, but it's better than nothing.  Also getting gas is a back priority since my truck and gensets might get fried.

Also stockpile dog food. Keep them healthy. Dogs will be important early warning when someone sets foot on your property to steal your goods.

Ok here we go,

After reading the e-mail a couple of times you look at the data and time sent, you realize that it was sent almost a day earlier. You have only 5 minutes untill the CME is going to hit earths atmosphere.

with 5 minutes notice of a pening natural disaster like the world has never seen before. Does your plan change ? What do you do ?

Get in my car and decide where to head to first.  If 5 mins, I'd probably head to my dad's house.  It's closer by and he will need help anyways.  I figure I'll get as far as I can and then have to walk the rest of the way.  I would call family and select friends on the way.  There's a good amount of food and water and more all around survival type stuff at my dad's house.  He also has a good amount of stuff like firearms and ammo, two cars that are usually almost full with gas, emergency generator, etc.

I'd buy stocks in whatever companies sell equipment and supplies to electric utilities.  Fill up the bathtub and water bottles.  Top off the gas tank in the car.  Then stay indoors

Round up the wife and kids, make sure the safes are opened and then worry about water, water, and more water.

5 minutes?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Stay calm. Don't rush.

Panic kills more than anything else in most situations.

5 minutes, eh? Well, there's no point in trying to shop, all of their sales systems will be down before I reach a store. I'd start filling water containers, and while that was happening, make sure to shut down and unplug all electronics. Stick all portable electronics in the oven and close the door. Then crack the last cold beer I'm likely to have for a while!

Not sure if it's still relevant now, but gas stations need electricity to run the gas pumps and almost none of them had a backup generator.  There was an incident in the past, think it was a hurricane, where the power was out for a long time and the emergency vehicles could only fuel up at one gas station in the area which had an emergency generator.

5 minutes?

Watering every container I can think of.
Unplug devices to prevent surges from damaging them (is that a thing for solar flares?)
Bring everyone inside

5 min left, do like Tom,  after filling up every container with water; lock and load, crack a beer, sit on the front porch, and enjoy the chaos...   >:D

It'll be a few days until the real problems begin.....
