Help Me Recommend a Shotgun for Skeet and Bird to a Neighbor. (Read 4728 times)

Mr. Farknocker

I need some help from those with experience with shotguns.

My neighbor approached me a week ago asking me to recommend a shotgun. I asked  him what he would use it for and he told me skeet and bird shooting. He is not a firearms enthusiast as far and I know and does not shoot regularly. I didn't ask him what his firearms experience was but got the feeling that he has limited experience with shotguns and was looking to take up a new hobby. I have a tactical shotgun with very little time behind the trigger so I'm in no position to recommend something to him other than what I have. Can you recommend a middle-of-the road shotgun (in terms of quality) that won't beak the bank for my neighbor?

TIA

Recommend going used...26-28" O/U, Stevens 555 or CZ or a used CZ or MOSSBERG SA 26 or 28" barrels. if he finds out he really likes it, then he can always sell and move up to a higher end scattergun... :shaka:

Mossberg model 500.
My every other recommendation would be
too high end for a beginner.  I like Browning
(Hunting) and Baretta's (Trap and Skeet).

I would get a 28" semi-auto. I own and have shot a few Benelli's and would recommend the Córdoba, super sport or the SBE2 all are very nice but are also a little pricey but not like DL's "Perazzi" Beretta's are also nice and typically cheaper, the 391 or the a400 would be a good choice. A Remington 1100 would be a good gun for some one who is getting into shooting and you can probably get one for cheaper than the others. If he is an older person, recoil sensitive or wants to shoot a lot and blow ammo away I would get a 20 gauge.

If you're using the word "skeet" literally, you're talking about a specific shotgun sport, the one with two launchers and eight shooting positions. If he ends up getting INTO it, the gun he's going to want is not going to be cheap. But here are a couple of things to keep in mind as he selects his first:
1. Skeet is short range. You need very little, or even no choke. Interchangeable chokes are fairly standard, but if he buys a barrel with a fixed choke, it should be cylinder or improved cylinder, nothing tighter.
2. Targets cross in front of you. You have to be able to swing that gun quickly, so shorter barrels and lighter guns are an advantage.
3. Skeet deals with 2 targets simultaneously, so being able to take a quick second shot is essential. Either a semi or an over-under is fine. Pumps are a handicap.

He needs to find a gun that meets these criteria and fits him well. Honestly, recommending a specific model isn't necessary; if it fits him well, and it functions reliably, he'll be fine.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Ruger Red label over/under or a Benelli Vinci.  Can't go wrong with either of those.  Both can be used for skeet or hunting.
