Open/Reflex/Tactical Red Dot Sight Recommendation
« on: February 05, 2012, 08:38:31 PM »
Hey Everyone,

I want to start looking for an open type red dot sight for my .357 revolver. I have seen other types called reflex and tactical besides open. Not sure what the differences are yet. I am just starting to research them. What I want is a best for the buck type. In other words, not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. Any one have any good recommendations? Thanks!

I started researching red dots about a month ago for my Beretta Neos. I just picked up this one
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004DDJNOY/?tag=2ahawaii-20

Main reason: it's cheap enough to take a chance and one reviewer said he has it on a 12 gauge so I figured it should handle the recoil of a .22LR easily. This red dot also has the option to change color to green, that's important because different lighting/backdrop situations make one color show up better than the other. It hasn't seen much action yet so I'll have to update later on my personal experience with it.

From what I remember of my research into red dots, there are two methods of creating the red dot image: reflex/reflector and holographic. Reflex sights project the aiming reticule (red dot) onto the viewing lens which has a mirror-like coating which then reflects the image of the reticle toward your eye. Holographic sights use a holographic reticle that is superimposed onto whatever you are looking at and don't have a mirror-like coating so it looks like you are just looking through glass.

Then there are the two shapes that red dots come in: open and tube. Open is....well open, everything is out there and a lens sticks up with the adjusting controls and aiming reticle projector behind it. Some, like EOTech, have a case around the lens so it looks a little different but still an open type. Tube types look like short scopes and have the method of projection somewhere inside the tube and the adjustment controls are on the outside. I think open or tube is just a matter of personal preference

I don't remember seeing anything about tactical red dots...I doubt it has anything to do with the reticle projection or shape. Maybe it's more durable, has more reticle shape/color options, and only comes in black, lol.

Hope that helps

By the time the gun show comes around I will have about 3-4 different reflex sights in. some are really small and light.
These are inexpensive but good quality.  i have the AIM sports one (looks nearly the same as the one linked) on my AR but the new ones coming in are half that size.

A lot of the open red dots look very similar. I considered the Aim Sports red dot but it only displayed a red dot. I wanted one with at least one other color option (green or blue).

Are those new small ones for 22 or can they handle larger calibers?

Still going to have 3-4 different reflex sights in by the show? I think I have decided to go with the tube type but I'll check out what you bring to the show. Do any of them come in silver? Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I read all of the reviews on this one and I am concerned that it won't stand up to the punishment.

Hey guys, sorry to revive an old post but i had a question about an eotech so i figure i'd just keep it in this thread, anyway i need some help IDing this eotech, its a pretty old model, it says it was manufactured in 2002... a friend gave it to me after his first deployment.

I'd like to know if i can use a eotech magnifier on it, only reason why i have my doubts is because i haven't seen this model being used with a magnifier. And i'd just like to know what model it is just for the sake of knowing.

thanks for any input, i appreciate it!

Not too sure of the model but I can't think of any reason a magnifier wouldn't work though. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That looks like a fake knockoff Eotech.

A magnifier will work, though.

Yeah kinda looks like a knock off to me too. What does it look like when you open the battery cover?

Does it say holo graphic sight on the right side? You might have a very early production eotech.

i guess someone has to check when eotechs first came out
if it is an early model, then that's why it looks funny compared to newer ones
plus, early in eotech production, there probably weren't any cheap knockoffs
only once something becomes really popular do they get knocked off

well im not debating if its real or not, i was just curious if it had a model name and if a magnifier would work with it.

but here's some more pics,

oh and no it does not say "holographic sight" on the side. but yes, this is an old sight regardless if its real or a knock off, my friend gave it to me when i got an acog.

but yeah real or not, was still free and she work good :shaka:
