According to Police and DLNR, to protect youself from someone robbing you with a gun. Never go hiking alone (so the gunman can rob more than one person) beware of your surroundings (so you can get everything ready for him) and secure your belongings (so you have a harder time giving it up quickly)

This must be a pretty awesome topic to get you to come out of your cave!!

It amazes me when I see cars at beaches with realtor key boxes dangling from their frame. It doesn't take much to smash them with a hammer.

It's always an ongoing debate whether it's better to lock your doors when parked at a trailhead or to roll the windows down and keep the doors unlocked.

Breaking into parked cars is not even in the same ballpark as armed robbery.

Someone online was saying that you can carry a firearm while on hiking trails. But didn't want to post up the citation for it.  I thought it was only hunting areas.

cannot cite the law because it's illegal unless you are a licensed hunter in a hunting area

Quote
§134-5  Possession by licensed hunters and minors; target shooting; game hunting.
(a)  Any person of the age of sixteen years, or over or any person under the age of sixteen years
while accompanied by an adult, may carry and use any lawfully acquired rifle or shotgun and suitable ammunition
while actually engaged in hunting or target shooting
or while going to and from the place of hunting or target shooting;
provided that the person has procured a hunting license under chapter 183D, part II.
A hunting license shall not be required for persons engaged in target shooting.

Looks like a hunting (hiking?) trail qualifies if you're going to hunt or coming back.

Don't think they expect you to parachute into a "hunting area".  Of course, guessing what "they" think is often impossible!

Then, maybe you can help me out?  What does "cars at the beach with realtor key boxes" have to do with the story in the OP?

Just wondering if I missed the actual point.

ah, but you can only "use" a firearm at a range, or in a hunting area (if in season and licensed), or at home (if you are in fear of being raped, murdered, or sodomized)

Not all hikes are in hunting zones though was my point I tried to make to them.
Thanks for the link though

There are many crimes that can occur on DLNR land. The most common being car break ins and stolen vehicles. There was a lady a few years back who placed her keys in one of those magnetic key boxes and placed it under her wheel well to go snorkeling. Her car was gone when she got back. I believe she finally got it back with all her stuff gone and car stripped. What likely happened is that someone in the parking lot saw her place the key under the car and waited for her to leave. I made sure I placed distinguishing bumper stickers on the back of my car. There are many many white SUVs on this island with honu stickers.

Self defense is a legal use of a firearm if carried legally.  Until threatened, you weren't breaking any laws if actually going to/from hunting or target practice.

Since I moved here almost 3 years ago and from talking to people, I have learned:
1.   75% of the homes in my area and probably most of Puna have guns.
2.   All of the ones I talked to say they would shoot someone stealing their stuff.

I do know that the numerous wild pigs around here will make a naked dead body disappear in a day or two.  That's how I get rid of dead chickens.
Happily living in Puna

I think what you really need to do is to go hiking with more than 10 people so the perp won't have enough bullets for everyone.

I'm pretty sure that was the rationale for not giving a hearing to senator Gabbard's 17 round handgun mag bill... it'd be too hard to get together a party of 18 hikers, but 11 is doable. And they know that the criminals follow the 10 round mag bill... just like they follow all other laws except robbery.  :shaka:
