Anyone cut thick steel?
« on: June 25, 2017, 09:21:44 PM »
Bought a Barrel Wrench but didnt think it through all the way and got the wrong one.  I actually like it but it's designed for a naked barrel but my barrel has the Post on it already.  Anyone know of any Shops that can cut this for me.

The middle one is what I want done

An angle grinder with a cut off wheel will do the trick if you have one.

I cut 12 inches of 3/4 steel plate with a tungsten carbide sawzall blade.  The machine shop was stunned when I told them what I cut it with.  The cut was very thin and clean.  Only took about 15 minutes.

A "Post"?

Do you mean a gas block and/or front sight?  Better, imo to remove them and use the full circle of support for the barrel nut.   The partly open ones can have a tendency to stretch apart, destroying things if high torque is used..

Had one for a Troy FF tube and the nut spread open a bit rendering it useless before the nut was at full torque and alignment..  Lucky to get the nut back off.  I did have a nut that was threaded wrong and far too much torque was needed.

Edit, went out to look at the tools.  The Troy wrench that sprang open was one with the little bumps rather than pins to engage the nut gas tube scallops.  When it stretched open it lost a secure mating with the nut scallops and slipped.  The pins would have the same issue.

Yeah, I was trying to be efficient with my words, and failed.

Remove the thing and use the tool you have.  Much stronger.  You do not want the tool to distort and slip under heavy torque.

Universal Manufacturer's in Kalihi.  They have a water jet cutter that I believe is able to cut through 3/8" steel.  Very clean cut, much cleaner than laser as there is no pitting.

Universal Manufacturers' water jet is capable of cutting more than 12" thick steel plate (at a great expense). You are welcome to bring your barrel nut wrench there to be cut, but the cutting method would be as described by kia_killer, an angle grinder with a cut off wheel.
