Good luck getting WC insurance.

I lived in Vegas for five years and returned last February. We noticed the smell of marijuana every where including the rental car shuttle from the airport.

I still maintain that if we allowed recreational marijuana, we could build the light rail completely around the island. I know that would never be allowed with the missionary culture here.

You mean if the statist tyrant nanny-staters legislated total state control of what is really a personal choice and taxed in a manner that no one would tolerate for any other "product", right? What other plant does the government declare under penalty of prison exactly how many you can have in your yard or home?  :wtf: Fuck them all... it's none of their fucking business, any more than the size of handgun magazines is any of their business. And, I'll reiterate, I'm NOT a consumer of cannabis (or alcohol), but am an advocate for personal liberty and freedom, and despise the concept of "victimless crimes" where the elites are supposedly protecting people from only themselves (and no harm is likely even there with cannabis (or handgun magazines over 10 rounds capacity)).

What light rail? There is no light rail here.  :geekdanc: :geekdanc: :geekdanc:

One of the things that pisses me off about the rail project is the decision to build the heavy rail system on Hawaii. Why? What do we need with heavy rail here? Light rail would have been just as good and cheaper to build.

Compared to Portland's streetcars? That may happen anyway.

In 20 years, every acre of farmland in EB and Kapolei will be housing. The rail system will look like a cheap alternative to the highway system which will probably cost $100B to fix then. Like I said before, we're fucked...

Not sure why you are comparing our heavy rail system to Portland's street cars? Let me know what your comment meant.

I was just letting you know we don't have a light rail system here. We have, and are building, a heavy rail system here in Hawaii.

Is Portland's streetcar system what you might call a light rail system? I rode on it last month and it worked well for me. I wonder if Honolulu could transition the heavy rail system up to Middle St to a light rail system down in Honolulu, or would two train systems have to be used. That would suck.

Wow. That photo reminded me of downtown St. Louis in the 50s when I was a kid. Even at that time I saw those "streetcars" as relics of the past, including all the hideous overhead wires running every which way (especially above intersections). I assume that Portland system is solar powered (haven't they banned all geologically-based fuel sources there?), but why all the ugly overhead wires still? Can't they get all the necessary solar generating power equipment on board? I suppose the next "advancement" there will be horse-powered mass transit vehicles (assuming they will have a way to ascertain that all the horses are "volunteers" and not unwilling participants (aka "slaves").

Examples of "light rail" from San Diego and Los Angeles:

No, street car systems are really nothing more than a bus system on rails. They carry a small amount of people and move slow because they are usually built along a street and mix in with traffic. A light rail system carries less people than a heavy rail system and runs slower than heavy rail and is usually built on the ground rather than elevated or underground. But will cross streets at gated crossings as they will have have right of way and run parallel to streets but not within the streets like street cars and buses. A heavy rail system carries a lot more people than light rail, moves fast compared to light rail, and is usually built elevated above ground or below. Basically, light and heavy rails will have their own stations built near bus and street car stations so passengers can transfer from light/heavy rail to bus or street car to reach their final destination. All of this is generally speaking now.

I can use the LA system as an example since I have experience with this. In LA they built 4 light rail systems to transport people from outer areas and other counties into downtown LA. They also built two subways which are heavy rail systems to run under downtown. And all of these can transfer directly to their bus system for further dispersion of passengers.

Los Angeles used to have an all electric mass transit system (Light Rail and Street Cars) called the Red Cars and Yellow Cars respectively and was operated by Pacific Electric:

I have a fond memory of riding the yellow cars which were the street cars in downtown LA with my mother and father once when I was VERY VERY young.

Added a couple of photos of the red and yellow cars in Los Angeles.

The New Orleans street car system is fun. We rode on that last year. Very old school...

I'm surprised at the opioid number.

I'm surprised at the opioid number.
Surprised it's that high, or that it's that low given the "catastrophic epidemic" headlines we see daily?

That pie chart was published in late 2014, so the opioid numbers could be significantly higher now.

From the article that accompanied that chart:

We can see from these two graphs that there are significant disparities between who utilized treatment and who did not. The most provocative statistics shows that six out of 10 people with a Heroin Use Disorder were likely to get treatment, compared to six out of 100 people with an Alcohol Use Disorder. In other words, people with problematic heroin use, who constitute less than 2% of all Americans with an SUD, were about 10 times more likely to use rehab treatment than those with an alcohol or marijuana use problem, who comprise over 80% of Americans with SUDs (see Figure 3). Indeed, these alcohol and marijuana disorders are the least likely of all SUDs to be treated.

I can't find anything more recent than 2015 stats:

Fentanyl
Are you saying that "prescription opioid" number is boosted by development and more frequent use/prescription of Fentanyl?

Some pain meds don't seem to "work" right on me.  Vicodin just makes me dizzy and one of the -codones (don't recall if it was the hydro or oxy) didn't seem to do anything.  Both times I was prescribed, I took maybe 1 or 2 doses and stopped.  Had a bunch of people asking what I did with the rest though. . .
