New Guy big island
« on: July 24, 2017, 10:24:17 AM »
Hi everyone!
Just moved to the big island, living in keaau now.
I used to be a 07/02 ffl/sot, I shoot a lot of long range in competition and for fun, and a lot of uspsa.
Don't really know too many folks so seeing if anyone on the big island is into shooting and wants to go out and plink sometime. Not much for ranges or anything haha!

Nice to meet you all!
Matt

Howdy!

There has been some discussion about where to shoot on the island and there was a recent State meeting about creating an official range.

That would be nice to have a range here! What's the legality of target shooting in the hunting areas? I tried a search but didn't find any legal law either way about target shooting responsibly on public lands that are not protected?

Welcome to the forum. Make sure you have emergency supplies. That island seems to attract storms.

Is a hunting permit required for any shooting on public lands? Are they a lot less strict about that on the Island?

I've read that a hunting permit is required to possess firearms in the hunting areas,

I'm kind of in the same boat.. looking for a place to shoot (for both me and my wife). She doesn't like the 9 or 44 because of recoil, but 22 is fun for her. But since there's no range and we don't have access to private property large enough and legally zoned to allow shooting, we're kind of stuck.
I took the Hunter's Ed class, but don't think that helps with shooting .22 since I don't think that's a legal hunting caliber here.
BTW,  howzit Matt.  I'm also in Keaau.  :shaka:

I have been shooting in my backyard since I moved to the Big Island 3 years ago.  3 acre lot next to forest reserve in Puna.  Neighbors haven't said anything and I hear gunshots regularly from lots around me too.  Don't know if it is "legal" or not, but like most things, if nobody complains or cares, nothing happens.  I know for a fact that almost everybody around me has guns.

Sure would be nice if we could get a "tax stamp" for a silencer here.

Yeah it sure would be. The wording of the law is even crazy.
Law enforcement is allowed to own, but their is no exclusion for dealers or manufacturers even, so there is no one to buy from even if you are a LEO 😂😂 good job legislature.

It's like the California law that makes it illegal to carry a firearm without a permit, except it's legal to do so at the moment you are under attack... so if you can make it magically appear at that moment, but not before, you are good to go. You gotta wonder if these people that pass these laws bother to read what they are voting on, and if so, why they don't care about what they are doing. [That's a rhetorical question...]

Suppressors are easy to make.  Don't tell or let anyone see it if you did.  YouTube has lots of videos on how to do it.  Purely for educational purposes, as no one here would even think of doing anything illegal.

Hahaha of course not! That would be silly as one of the last states without them legal...
